- Port Louis. Mauritius is all about the beach, but there’s also plenty of history and culture to be found, and the best place to explore it is Port Louis. The capital and largest city, it is known for landmarks like Aapravasi Ghat, a landing point of contracted Indian laborers who were the ancestors of the majority of the island’s present-day population (it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Citadelle Fort, and Port Louis Cathedral.
- Black River Gorges. A national park about a 45-minute drive south of Port Louis, Black River Gorges is the best place to enjoy Mauritius’ wild nature. Made up of both tropical rainforest and drier heathland, it has about 60 km (37 miles) of hiking trails and is notable for its diversity of flora and fauna that includes species like the Mauritian flying fox and pink pigeon. If you like the national park, you might also enjoy the neighboring Color Valley Nature Park which is just to the east.
- Grand Bay. There’s plenty of serene coastal spots in Mauritius, but if you’re looking for a more lively experience, the town of Grand Bay (also spelled Grand Baie) might be for you. Notable for its developed coastline and energetic nightlife, it is also known for its orchards, as well as great diving. The trip from Port Louis takes about 30 minutes by car.
- Taste the local cuisine. Mauritius is bursting with tasty foods to enjoy, including tons of tropical fruit and fresh seafood. Don’t miss out on eating the popular street food, notably the delicious dholl puri wrap. Mauritius is also known for its fruit wine and rum made from locally grown sugarcane.

The single passenger terminal serves both local and international flights. It was opened in 2013 and is designed to resemble Ravenala or “Traveller’s palm,” a tropical plant that grows in Mauritius and on other islands in the Indian Ocean.
Location
The airport is located about 48 km (30 mi) southeast of Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, a trip that takes slightly less than one hour by car. Motorways M2 and M1 are the main roads connecting Mauritius Airport to Port Louis. Many other famous Mauritian destinations are also near the airport - Black River Gorges National Park is 30 km (18 mi) west and can be reached in 40 minutes, Curepipe is 25 km (16 mi) northwest and can be reached in 25 minutes, and Blue Bay is just 11 km (6.8 mi) southeast and takes 15 minutes to reach by a rental car.

The infrastructure on the island is poor unless you stay at high-end all-inclusive venues. Roads are usually single lane with very high traffic volumes, access to many beach areas is closed off by large hotel and gold club developments.

It’s Mauritius. Beaches, delicious food, diving with sharks, swimming with dolphins-and two whales!!! Chaotic left side traffic on narrow streets with horrible surface, but people are polite, there’s an order in the chaos , no stress, they give each other space, no one is using the horn hysterically like it’s so common in the Mediterranean countries . You blend in soon.

A very good small local car renting company, the service was very good, company representative met us at the airport after our landing already with our car and after 5 minutes we hit the road.:-)
Returning the car was also an easy work, and was done at the airport.

Fantastic views over the underwater waterfalls in a helicopter and a seaplane. Fun at Splash & Fun waterpark. Visiting Port Louis, waterfront shopping and other towns too many to mention. We had a dream trip to Mauritius. Used the car to travel around the whole island. We were staying in one hotel but was able to see all beaches around the island. We also did subscooter dive, snorkeling, kayaking, clear boat trip, apart from wining and dining in meditation, Indian and Asian fusion restaurants. And also did half a day city tour in Port Louis.

Mauritius is an amazing island to explore by car and opens up the freedom to visit amazing beaches that are further away from the resorts. If you only stay in the resorts and are not moving around a lot, then transport can be easily arranged with the resort. We would rent a car for a similar trip again depending on the type of trip we do.

Google Maps isn't up-to-date everywhere, especially in areas where roads have been changed, eg. new or re-designed roundabouts, bridges, turning lanes, roads, et cetera. Google Maps helps a lot (we'd have been, literally, lost many times without it), but be sure to pay attention to road signs, too.
Familiarize yourself with what road markings mean before you start driving; for example, know and follow the arrows when entering a roundabout, and know what the zig-zag lines mean that sometimes appear in the middle of the road (where passing is prohibited) and along the side of the road (where parking is prohibited).
Enjoy the excellent roads and motorways; be especially careful in lanes.

While North Mauritius has the older settlements and resorts and housing the drive along the sea front has limited views as residences n hotels block the sea views on other hand the western area of Flic Flac beaches are more modern , newer construction and better views with livelier late night open cafés - but Mauritius is not Phuket - its to stick to your resort n relax n early tucking in nights n not all night or late night revellers bar hopping .

Taxis are very expensive. If you use the rental car for a to and return trip once a day you've basically covered the cost of a taxi. It is worth noting that if you are not used to traveling on narrow roads with drivers that consider traffic rules more of suggestions then laws I would not suggest renting a car. For the most part the highways are a decent width. Once you get of the highways the roads are about 8 ft wide. Going through the forest and up and down the mountains can be challenging. Also be prepared for cars to stop in the middle of the road and park so they can grab something to eat at a roadside shop. Sometimes they'll stop in the middle of the road facing the wrong direction. It was foreign to me but I suppose it could be common place in other countries.

I would recommend it. Make sure you get full insurance through a broker to avoid any surprise when giving the car back. Driving in Mauritius is a bit "chaotic" and it is very probably you might have a scratch or bump on the car. To avoid paying a penalty, get full insurance.
The communication was overall good, they use live chat and whatsapp which made it simple. However, the did not really reply my emails and had to chase them.
