The trip was amazing. We had a very local experience, loved the beaches for walking, did a Catamaran day out with JPH Charters, ate local Creole food at Escale Creole, and a wonderful seafood meal at The BEACH HOUSE in the north.

Rent a car and do a tour of the north and tour of the south yourself, don't pay for a taxi. North: Mont Choisy beach; Grand Baie beach (and town); Red church. South: Model boat shop in Curepipe; Grand Baisson Temple; Alexandria waterfall; Black River Gorge lookout; Rhumederie Chamarel; 7 sands; Curiousity Chamarel. Don't forget the beaches at Flic en Flac and La Morne.
All of these are easily accessible by car.

We traveled all the way around Mauritius coastal roads and inland. Stayed at 4 locations. Fabulous beaches, nature and wildlife very interesting, people were friendly and helpful. Loved our rental car as it provided freedom to explore and get off the Beaton track. (Ebony Forest, Tamarind Falls, Botanical Gardens; dolphin whale watching, Ile aux cerfs) Roads were good particularly if you are a UK driver it’s like driving back home. Very Easy. Mauritius has so much to offer. A jewel in the Indian Ocean.

We were given an automatic Mazda Demio and it was small enough for Mauritian roads and yet as powerful as an SUV, even though it was a hatchback and had run more than 1 lakh km! We thoroughly enjoyed the car and drove it all around Mauritius. We didn't feel the need for the GPS because you can just download offline maps and use them with location on your phone, even without data. However, there was no USB or Aux port in the car and the infotainment system was completely in Japanese. But the views and the navigation kept us busy so we didn't miss music!

The gas mileage was great on the vehicle. We visited port Louis, the 7 earth colors and le monte. Port louis is very busy and the waterfront is nearby and a nice area to visit and shop. The 7 earth is interesting and nice views on the way there. The coastal area is a nice drive to the south with beaches along the way.
