The single passenger terminal serves both local and international flights. It was opened in 2013 and is designed to resemble Ravenala or “Traveller’s palm,” a tropical plant that grows in Mauritius and on other islands in the Indian Ocean.
Location
The airport is located about 48 km (30 mi) southeast of Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, a trip that takes slightly less than one hour by car. Motorways M2 and M1 are the main roads connecting Mauritius Airport to Port Louis. Many other famous Mauritian destinations are also near the airport - Black River Gorges National Park is 30 km (18 mi) west and can be reached in 40 minutes, Curepipe is 25 km (16 mi) northwest and can be reached in 25 minutes, and Blue Bay is just 11 km (6.8 mi) southeast and takes 15 minutes to reach by a car.

Car's essential on Mauritius, public transport means old, air-polluting buses that won't take you everywhere (or only with multiple changes). We used the car every day from transferring to and from the airport, through going up to the mountains to starting points of hikes, eating out in restaurants further from our accommodation, driving up from the south to the north to do scuba diving, beach hopping, getting to a meeting point early in the morning to watch dolphins, visiting attractions such as Grand Bassin Temple, 7 Coloured Earth and Casela Nature Park, driving up from the south to the north to do scuba dicing, to shopping.

This was my first self driving experience in Mauritius and I really loved it. I travelled around the island and had a fantastic time experiencing the sights and sounds of Mauritius. Driving gave me a lot of flexibility and I could go wherever/whenever I wanted. I spent time in the North and South West and a day in Mahbourg - all having varied thing thing to see and do.

The only thing was orrible I had to give a "gift " to a police man because I didn't respected the speed limit I was 4 km/h faster then limit of 80 km/h he told me that I need to pay a fine of 2500 rupie but instead pay a fine to government with a 1000 rupie directly to him he let us go.

The hospitality of Mauritian people is outstanding as is the natural beauty of the island. Very high standards of accommodation and cuisine. Table d hote is a must do. My husband tried his hand at sailing 😊 and we all enjoyed our holiday very much -time flew past.
whilst the UK was experiencing inprecedented heatwave Mauritus was experiancing unseasonably cold, wet and very windy weather which meant some of the sea based activities were not possible - so we have a good excuse to go back

The island has a lot of history so a visit to many of the main sugar cane museums and houses is recommended, we traveled all around the island on the coast road and got a proper feel for the lifestyle of the local people.
