Having a car on your disposal in Mauritius give you a lot of freedom. The roads and parking is free and there are a lot of amazing places you would miss without having a car, because the excursion offices don't offer them.

We enjoyed the trip despite the poor start with the agent at the airport. Our hotel was in a real beauty spot and we visited some of the north of the island to see the Botanical Garden, a national heritage Hindu temple and Cap Malheureux; we also went on a trail in the Bras d'Eau National Park.

Family trip, the snorkeling in Grandbaie was great, especially with the dolpins and turtles. Our stay was nice. The reastaurants, especially in the east of the island are very expensive. In Grandbaie the food was very good and more affordable.

chamarel is expensive for what is propose; pamplemousse garden is super nice; flik en flacq and mont choisie beach are super beautifull to swim; but pointe au canonnier and trou d'eau douce are better to see coral and fishes.

I was staying Long Beach Resort, North East side. Resort itself was enough for 2-3 days to explore. Amazing landscape and food options. Also visited Casela Natural Park; need one day there to explore fully.

Everithing was super smooth! Staff waited us immediately after landing and patiently waited till we exchanged the money and bought the SIM in the terminal, leaded us to car and gave clear instructions, no worries was also during car return, fast, easy and clear!

We drove all around Mauritius. We particularly enjoyed the south coastal road on the way to our stay in Flic en Flac. Lots of beautiful view spots and beaches to visit. Flic en Flac had the most incredible snorkelling and the beach was pristine! I highly recommend visiting that town. For the adventurous type, climbing Le Morne Brabant with a guide is an excellent way to start your day.

if you are not used to driving with the steering on the right side you can only drive a car with automatic transmission, I also had a manual transmission for a while but the automatic transmission will make driving much easier

Better to rent from someone that is in the building outside the arrivals hall. The car rental agencies operating from the car park are very efficient, but the weather might be a problem, ie heavy rain and you are out in the open. Especially upon returning your car - sometimes hard to find them.

Stick to the basics bearing in mind it's a temporary rental... so the 3 R's count.... Reliable, Reasonable, Responsive (to your standard and place of touring). Also, stick to the traffic rules, pre-arrange your drop-off and collection via e-mail, verify your details with contingencies, take care and be vigilant... and enjoy

If you eant to see sny of the island of Mauritius hiring a car is the best way to do it. If you're happy to lay on the beach for the duration of your holiday don't bother. Places worth visiting by car include Pamplemousses Gardens, Black River Gorge National Park, Port Louis, Le Morne, Flick en Flack beach, Grand Bay. Some of the old plantation houses.

Definitely hire a car, there are very few traffic lights on the island, no traffic whatsoever and it works out considerably cheaper than hiring taxis.
