Part of the Dodecanese archipelago, Rhodes is one of the most visited islands of Greece. Most visitors are drawn to its beautiful and extensive coastline, but there’s also plenty of archaeological sites, architecture, and religious history to explore. Here are some of the most interesting attractions of Rhodes:
- Rhodes Town. Located at the island’s northern tip, the main settlement of Rhodes is also one of its main attractions. Best known for its wonderful old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the city is home to such landmarks as the Gothic Grand Master’s Palace, the former Jewish quarter of La Juderia, Suleymaniye Mosque, and St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral. The Archaeological Museum, the Acropolis of Rhodes, and many of the island’s best hotels and restaurants can also be found here.
- Lindos. Lindos is a beautiful village located on the east coast of Rhodes. It is best known for its picturesque, whitewashed buildings, narrow streets and alleys, and vibrant atmosphere. The main landmark is the Acropolis of Lindos, where you can explore the remains of the ancient temples and buildings, and take in the stunning views of the Aegean Sea. The drive from Rhodes Town is very pleasant, and it will take you about 50 minutes.
- The southern coast. Feeling like a different island, the southern coast is the wildest part of Rhodes. It’s not possible to swim here because of the very strong winds. You might need a 4x4 vehicle due to the condition of the mountain roads, but the wonderfully austere landscapes make the effort of getting here worth it. In this part of the island, you’ll find the Skiadi Monastery which was built during the Byzantine times and isn’t used anymore, but is nonetheless an interesting place to visit. Also, don’t miss Prassonissi, which is world-famous for its excellent wind and kite surfing. It’s not possible to swim here because of very strong winds and shallow waters, but the landscape is amazing!
- Fanes. Equally known for its family-friendly atmosphere and great windsurfing and kitesurfing waves, Fanes is one of the chillest spots on Rhodes. Located on the island’s northwestern coast, the coastal village is about half an hour’s drive from Rhodes Town. Historically, Fanes was known for its fishing and agriculture, and the local produce from both industries is still worth seeking out if you decide to visit.

Rhodes Airport is about 14 km (8.7 mi) southwest of Rhodes Town, the capital of Rhodes Island. To get from the airport to the town you can follow the route: Leof. Eleftherias > Leof. Iraklidon > Ialisou, and you’ll be there in about 20 minutes. Note that parking is not allowed in certain areas of the town.

We took a 3 hour boat trip with a company called Sophia Cruise. We went snorkeling and just had a great time. The people in Rhodes were so friendly and helpful. We stayed in an Airbnb in Kolympia I believe it was called Summer Holidays. The host’s name was Nicolas. He was great and the accommodations were beautiful. There was a great shopping area within walking distance and we did a lot of shopping! We went to a few restaurants in the area and a few bars. We even had a hookah with our drinks one night. We went to the valley of butterflies. We went to a winery next to a farm with a petting zoo. We went to a few beaches. We really had a wonderful time in Rhodes! I can’t say anything bad.

Used the car to travel from the North to our hotel in the South on the first day. I advise not going to quickest way, much better views and lovely winding roads. A couple of day trips to Seven Springs, Lindos and the local Crazy Golf. On our last day we drove back North to have a day in Old Town before dropping off the car with a full tank (plenty of fuel stations on route so dont panic!).

Driving at Rodos was easy. The traffic is not too hectic and people drive nicely. We were driving a lot around the town of Rodos but also elsewhere on the island. We had affordable Fiat Panda as a rental. It was nice little car for the week, very convenient size when parking. The small engine struggled at some points with the steeper hill climbs and some hills needed several downshifts to maintain desired speed.

The beaches on the eastern part of the island are mostly sandy and to the west are mainly with pebbles and more breezy. Recommend a visit to the beach and ancient castle of Lindos and to the medieval castle (Old Town) of Rhodes. One can haggle for a better deal at the shops in Old Town.
In Greece all traffic light intersections are no turn on red.
Although one can rent a car with just a state issued license at most rental companies, the fine for not having an international driver's license is 200 euros.

If we were staying nearer to the airport with easy (walkable) access to restaurants, bars and beaches then we would probably not rent a car. However, as we were further afield (Lardos) and our hotel was at least 25mins walk to the nearest tavernas, bars and sandy beaches then the car was a must and good value for the money. Cheaper than taxi transfers and gave us easy access to the beaches of Pefkos, Lindos, Gannadi etc.
