Driver's license requirements
- Spain recognizes the driver’s licenses of all the member states of the European Economic Association (EEA). Spain also recognizes other foreign driver’s licenses that are printed in a Latin script, provided that you are visiting as a tourist on a trip shorter than 6 months. If you’re staying in the country for a longer period or are residing there permanently, you need to obtain a local license instead.
- If your driver’s license is printed in another alphabet than Latin (e.g., Cyrillic or Arabic), you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) too.
- Similarly, if your driver’s license doesn’t show your photograph, you might be required to have an IDP.
- Even if you have an IDP, you also need to keep your original license on you as you will be required to provide both.
- You must carry your driver’s license, not a copy, with you at all times.
- You need to have had your driver’s license for at least two years.
- Some rental car suppliers charge a young driver fee for drivers between the ages of 22 and 25 and a senior driver fee for drivers over the age of 65.
- There may be additional requirements depending on the car supplier and category, so make sure to check the rental conditions before booking.
Crossing borders
Spain is bordered by Portugal, France, and Andorra. Like Spain, Portugal and France are members of the Schengen Area, so the same entry requirements that apply to Spain will also be in place to enter these other two countries. Andorra is not a member of the Schengen Area, but its entry requirements are, in practice, the same as those for entering Schengen members.
The autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla are part of Spain but are physically located in North Africa and bordered by Morocco. Morocco is not a member of the Schengen Area and has its own visa policy. Depending on your citizenship, you may or may not need a visa to enter it. We strongly advise getting in touch with your Ministry of Foreign Affairs in advance to find out if you need a visa to visit Morocco.

It was a perfect trip, the hotel REC Barcelona was amazing, and highly recommended, the restaurants were all amazing but I don't remember their names, you have to visit Sagrada Familia, camp nou and Barcelona for museum, a theater with flamenco show (city hall was good price and incredible show) and the area of monjuich (if I pronounce right) which has the museum of art of barcelona, the magic fountain with amazing view and of course the ride with the teleferic of Monjuich which has also an incredible view! You can also visit Barceloneta and the beachside which is a beautiful place. There were only 2 problems. The first one was probably our fault because I didn't book my ticket in time for park Guell and it was sold out until early January 2025, so you have to book them very early if you want to visit it. The second one was about the portaventura park at Tarragona, a city about 1.30 hour outside of Barcelona.. it's an amazing park, for sure, BUT, not only the lines for every game are huge and you wait there for hours, but they also do not inform us, that some games are closed due to the weather and we wait 2 hours at every line, only to tell us that it's not open. It's unacceptable behavior and it's too bad because the park looks amazing and it would be an incredible experience!
