Airport travel guide

The capital and largest city of Andalusia, Seville might not have the beaches of nearby Malaga or the historical clout of Granada, but that shouldn’t stop anyone from visiting this gem of a city. Simultaneously timeless and full of life, it has its own set of notable landmarks, but the main attractions of Seville are its special atmosphere and the cordiality of its inhabitants. All the same, here are five interesting destinations in and around the city:
- Seville Cathedral. Although Seville is a good distance from the Atlantic coast, its location on the Guadalquivir River made it one of the most important cities during the Age of Discovery. So it is perhaps only appropriate that the city’s main cathedral is the final resting place of arguably the most famous of explorers, Christopher Columbus. More than that, the Gothic church that took almost 130 years to finish is also an architectural masterpiece. During your visit to Seville Cathedral, you can also visit its bell tower, called La Giralda. It offers incredible views of the city.
- Archaeological Museum. Thousands of years before Columbus and other travelers sailed the ocean in search of new lands, the area of Seville was already inhabited by advanced civilizations like the Tartessians, Phoenicians, and Romans. Dedicated to this precious heritage is the Archaeological Museum of Seville with its eight exhibition rooms and thousands of fascinating artifacts.
- Alcázar. Granada and Cordoba are not the only cities in Andalusia to boast magnificent Islamic citadels – the region’s capital also has something to boast about in this regard. Dating back to the 10th century, the Royal Alcázar of Seville, located just a stone’s throw from the previously mentioned Cathedral, is one of the city’s most notable architectural landmarks.
- Doñana National Park. Encompassing the delta of the Guadalquivir River, Doñana National Park is one of the most interesting protected areas in all of Spain. Made up of wetlands, sand dunes, pine forests, and beaches, as well as a network of hiking trails, the area is home to unique wildlife species like Marismeño or the marsh horse, Iberian lynx, red deer, and greater flamingo. The trip from Seville takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes by car.
- Hospital de los Venerables. A former retirement home for elderly priests might not normally be too high on your list of places to see, but this building is arguably one of the finest examples of Andalusian architecture in the city. Run by the Diego Velasquez Foundation, it has been turned into a museum where you can learn more about Seville’s religious history and even see Santa Rufina, a painting by Velasquez himself.
