A city that needs no introduction, Florence is one of Italy’s (and Europe’s) most famous destinations - many Italians even find it more beautiful than Rome or Venice. A city that lives and breathes art and history, Florence is simultaneously a modern cultural hotspot, and also offers access to the rest of the region of Tuscany. With that in mind, these are six of the most interesting attractions in and around it:

• Florence Cathedral. Also known as Santa Maria del Fiore or simply “the Duomo,” the Cathedral of Florence is arguably the main symbol of this famous city. A monumental effort of various generations, it took 140 years to finish, but the result is one of the most impressive churches in Europe. The statues, paintings, and interior of the cathedral can be just as awe-inspiring as its facade.  You can even climb up to the top of the dome!
• The Uffizi Galleries. If the Duomo is the main building of the city, The Uffizi is the mother of all Florentine museums. One of the oldest in Europe — it turns 442 in 2023 — the art museum is home to countless masterpieces, including some by Caravaggio, Rembrandt, da Vinci, and Michelangelo. • Montepulciano. Chianti, Tuscany’s most famous wine-growing region, is close to Florence, and if you head even further south, you’ll find more excellent Tuscan wines.. One such place to visit is Montepulciano, a hilltop destination that is as known for its well-preserved architecture as it is for its excellent wines, including Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Vino Rosso di Montepulciano. The area’s wineries are fascinating to visit - just remember to book ahead, as many Tuscan wineries don’t accept walk-ins.  . The drive from Florence to Montepulciano takes about 90 minutes.
• Bargello. Located roughly halfway between Uffizi and Duomo, the National Museum of Bargello has one of the most notable collections of sculptures on the planet. Also known as the People’s Museum and situated in a former prison, the museum boasts many famous artworks such as Michelangelo’s Bacchus. • Fiesole. Located just north of Florence, the small town of Fiesole is known for its elevated location and thus provides fascinating views of the city below and the countryside that surrounds it. The town also has a small, but interesting museum dedicated to its Etruscan and Roman roots, as well as relatively more recent pages of history.
• Siena. Having a rental car means you can explore not just Florence, but the surrounding region, and one of the best day trips from the city is undoubtedly Siena. Located in Southern Tuscany, about an hour’s drive from Florence, Siena has been important since at least Medieval times and has the oldest bank in the world, one of the oldest universities in the world, and a city center that has been recognized as a World Heritage Site. Of no less importance to a traveler is the fact that it also boasts a cuisine that’s considered special even by sky-high Italian standards.

The airport is about 8 km (5 miles) from the city center. You can travel easily between the city center by tram, bus, or taxi.

Car rental desks

Most are located in a building called Palagio degli Spini, which is next to the airport. It can be reached by a free shuttle bus that runs every 20 minutes.

Nearest gas station

A Beyfin station is located at Viale Giovanni Luder, 40/42 just meters from the airport entrance, and less than 1km from the car rental return on Via Palagio degli Spini. , 50127 and takes about one minute to reach by car. The gas station is open 24 hrs.
