Airport travel guide

Not only Austria’s capital and largest city, Vienna is also one of Europe’s most interesting urban destinations. The city boasts everything from imperial architecture to fascinating culture and delicious local cuisine. These are five of Vienna’s most famous attractions:
- Hofburg. The former home of the Habsburg royal family, this palatial complex is as huge as it is magnificent. Initially built during the Middle Ages, it is now the home of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), but, more importantly, is also a prime tourist attraction and the location of numerous attractions and museums. Very centrally located, the Hofburg is practically a stone’s throw away from numerous other famous landmarks.
- Hundertwasserhaus. Impossible to mistake for anything else, this unique and quirky apartment building is named after the author of its idea, the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Although it continues to be the home of locals and businesses and therefore hasn’t been turned into a museum, you can still admire it from the outside. Another Hundertwasser project, the modern art museum of KunstHausWien, is nearby.
- Globenmuseum. Claiming to be the only institution of this type in the world, the centrally located Globe Museum features more than 600 globes, spheres, and planetaria. The collection has been gathered from different locations around the world, representing both historical and scientific understandings that different groups of people have held about the universe.
- Leopold Museum. Vienna has a wealth of world class art museums, but Leopold stands out among them as it is primarily focused on the works of the most famous Austrian creators such as Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, and Oskar Kokoschka (the museum boasts the largest collection of Schiele’s works in the world). Located in the 7th district of the city, it is part of the so-called Museum’s Quarter and is just a stone’s throw from several other cultural institutions.
- Albertina. Yet another art space of global fame, Albertina ranks among the top 100 most visited museums on the planet. Its collections include many works by famous impressionists such as Monet and Toulouse-Lautrec, as well as one of the largest print rooms in the world. The building of the museum has its own story to tell – it was damaged in a bombing during the Second World War and significantly rebuilt in the following decades.
