Famous as one of the main beach hubs of the famous Costa Blanca (or ‘White Coast’) and the larger Valencian Community, Alicante attracts thousands of visitors each year. Home to some of the most picturesque seaside in all of Spain, Alicante is also home to ancient history, interesting culture, and delicious cuisine. Here’s the pick of the main attractions that you can easily reach from Alicante if you hire a car:
- Elche. The next-door neighbour of Alicante, Elche (or Elx, as it’s known in the local dialect) is used to getting fewer visitors because of its inland location. But if you take the 30 minute trip to this charming, slow-paced city, you’ll get a chance to marvel at the beautiful Elche palm gardens (the only ones in Europe), visit many high-quality archaeological museums, or visit the Banys Àrabs, the subterranean 12th-century baths now turned tourist attraction.
- Torrevieja. Of the many picturesque coastal towns that dot the Costa Blanca, Torrevieja might just be the most famous one. Its beautiful beaches are no secret, as well as its coastal cliffs and coves, many of which can be accessed by tourists. But the town is also home to the impressive Museum of the Sea and Salt and has a nature park made up of two saltwater lakes. Whether you choose to stay here or just visit on a short trip from Alicante, Torrevieja is definitely worth it.
- Serra Mariola Natural Park. Spain is home to many protected landscapes and the Province of Alicante is no exception. The Serra Mariola is perhaps best known for its stunning waterfalls but also offers great mountain paths for hiking and opportunities to experience the flora and fauna of this part of the country. The park, located near the picturesque town of Alcoy, is just an 80-minute drive northwest of Alicante.
- Biar. Although its population is just about 3,500, each year the town of Biar gets many times more tourists than that. Undoubtedly, the city’s main attraction is its impressive Arab castle, but other examples of interesting medieval architecture can be seen on every step of the way. Located inland in the mountains, Biar is just 50 km (31 miles) from Alicante.
- Cartagena. Founded by the Phoenicians, who gave it the same name as the legendary city of Carthage, it’s safe to say that Cartagena is not short on historical attractions. Many landmarks of that, as well as Roman and Moorish eras, survive to this day, not least the city’s impressive amphitheater. On another note, the city is just a short drive away from a number of splendid beaches. Cartagena is 120 km (75 miles) southwest of Alicante, a drive that takes about 90 minutes.

Make sure you understand the road rules in Spain and make sure you keep a eye out for cyclists who are numerous and have more rights in Spain, other than that enjoy the scenery. Also take out excess insurance at home because it is more expensive from the car hire companies who make a good commission from it

Travellers should stay away from the big resorts such as Benidorm etc, the should look at other places near Alicante such as Torreveija, Cartagena, and all the small beach resorts in between

Murcia is a beautiful place and just over an hours drive from Alicante. Lots of long, clean beaches and places to eat out. Even in winter the sun shines and most of the time we had blue skys. We were based in Mar de Cristal which is nice and quiet but there is plenty to see and do in Los Belones, Cabo de Palos, Cartegena, La Manga and Portman, to name just a few.

We needed a car as we were exploring the Denia, Javea, Calpe, Moraira Altea region for the first time. The roads were very good and parking was easy with a bit of forward planning with Googlemaps.

Everything very positive, including getting a free upgrade. One silly thing is that they refuse to pick up more people than the driver, so if you come with 2, 1 needs to stay at the airport.akes zero sense because the van was empty. They blamed it on covid.

I think an easy guide to switch the language of the car would benefit the majority of your customers.
My experience was the fuel gauge dropped from full to 1 less than full once we had entered the garage.
Imagine my disappointment to be hit with a £/€58 charge. It only cost €40 to fill it up.
That has left a bitter taste so I'm inclined to shop around when I return next month.

I travelled north of Alicante to the Jalon valley, the area was very beautiful and offered a much more relaxed trip compared to a seaside resorts.

I would definitely hire again, as the product on offer is good value. However, I would urge other hirers to take time and photos while examining the vehicles before accepting the hire. Also, give yourself plenty of time when returning for a flight; the shuttle is quick, but the waiting times can be long during busy periods.
