Having a car to explore the island was a highlight of our trip.
Decide before you travel what approach you would like to take towards the deposit/excess waiver insurance. We saw our options were:
Independent Excess Insurance purchased pre-trip, which will be cheaper but likely involve more stress/paper work if a claim is required
Purchase cover directly from the car hire firm (which we noticed was cheaper to do at collection, rather than ahead of time) which will be more expensive but possibly easier
Accept that a deposit is at risk
We went with option 1, but a lack of trust in the car hire industry still made the hand over of the hire car a constant worry.
