Great island to explore by car with lots of hikes and beautiful scenery. Small car recommended, especially for mountain roads. Mountain roads are a bit tricky (better to be an experienced driver), but you get used to them and they were mostly empty in early March, just pull over for occasional locals to pass by. Most parking in the mountains was roadside or unpaved car parks.

Gran Canaria is such an easy island to get around it’s s best enjoyed with a car. The roads are generally in very good condition and most of the mountain roads are wide enough for cars to pass, just take your time and watch out for cyclists. There are plenty of road signs to help find your way, but even if you miss a turning there are plenty of stunning views so you won’t mind too much.

If you're driving in Gran Canaria and you're heading up to the mountains, you need a car with excellent road handling because the roads are extremely windy and often quite steep. It's pretty challenging all round.
