- The Inner City. A place called the inner city is usually associated with social and safety issues in much of the English-speaking world, but in Johannesburg, it actually denotes the most touristy part of the city. Attractions to be found in Joburg’s Inner City include Constitution Hill, Museum Africa, the Johannesburg Art Gallery (the largest art gallery on the continent), and the Sci-Bono Discovery Center. There is also notable architecture like St. Mary’s Cathedral and Lindfield Victorian House.
- The Apartheid Museum. The Apartheid Museum is one of the most notable history museums in Africa. Documenting the regime that was in power in the country for much of the 20th century, the museum provides an important lesson on the racial segregation that left its mark on millions of South Africans. There is also a permanent exhibition on Nelson Mandela, the iconic former president who is credited for bringing Apartheid down and leading the reconciliation. - Rietvlei Nature Reserve. A number of significant national parks are within a three-to-five-hour drive from Johannesburg, if you’re short on time, there are even closer places to enjoy nature. Holiday was fantastic, however, South African roads are in seriously bad condition and full of potholes. Other road users drive very dangerously and risk their on others lifes. Night driving and driving in bad weather is not recommended.

Cape Town is wonderful, effective sat mav is essential however. Too many places to mention that are worth visiting. The Eastern Free State is a jewel well worth a visit. The Frankfort road is being relaid so it is worthwhile taking the Warden route to and from Johannesburg to Golden Gate, Fouriesburg and Clarens.

It is a long drive to Kruger park. Allow at least 5 hours from airport. The roads to the park and in the park are good roads. Have cash as there are many tolls to pay.

I was travelling up to Marloth park in Mpumalanga province. It was about 5 HR drive from the airport. It wouldn't have been easy to get there without a car. A map or GPS is necessary to find your way out of Johannesburg from the airport as the signs don't give much information. Better signage on the return journey but again I needed a map to find a petrol station to refill car as there is none very close to the airport.
