Located on the coast of the Indian Ocean, Durban is South Africa’s third-largest city – and one of its most interesting destinations. Known for the diversity of its inhabitants, it has plenty going on in terms of culture and entertainment and is also near a number of beautiful nature areas. These are three of the most interesting attractions in and around Durban:

• The Golden Mile. One of the most famous urban beach areas in South Africa (if not the whole continent), the Golden Mile is the beating heart of Durban. In addition to swimming and sunbathing, the area is known as a serious surfing hotspot attracting professional wave riders from near and far.
• Museums. Museums are arguably not the first thing that most people think of when they think of Durban, but all the same, the city has a few decent ones. These include the Port Natal Maritime Museum which has several historical ships on display, the Natural Science Museum, the Durban Cultural and Document Center dedicated to the indentured Indian laborers that were brought to the area by the British, and the KwaZulu Natal Society of the Arts.
• uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. Taking up a sizable coastal portion north of Durban, uMhlanga is one of the most interesting nature preserves in the area. Made up of a river mouth and a dry forest, this is the right place to see landscapes characteristic of the Durban area, with many hiking trails permitting you to do just that. The drive from the city takes only about 25 minutes.

A single passenger terminal serves all domestic and international flights. The upper level is for departures, and the lower level is for arrivals.

Location

Durban Airport is about 35 km (22 mi) north of Durban city center. Motorways N2 and N3 are the main roads connecting the airport to the city.

Sasol King Shaka gas station at Mdloti Street can be reached in about three minutes and is open 24/7. There are other gas stations on the way to Durban.
