Airport travel guide

Located in the southwestern corner of mainland France, Biarritz is a great hub for exploring the Basque Coast in which it is located. The area’s main draw is its beautiful beaches , but it also has lots of history, art, and entertainment to explore. These are four of its most notable attractions in the city and nearby:
-
City of Ocean and Surf (also known as The Cité de l'Océan et du Surf). Located on the Bay of Biscay, Biarritz is known as one of the best places in France for hitting the waves. For the last ten years, in addition to getting in the water yourself, you can also visit the famous museum called the City of Ocean and Surf. Located in an award-winning glass complex that’s partially outdoors, this unique museum is dedicated both to surfing and marine conservation.
-
Bayonne. Located just a stone’s throw from Biarritz, cozy Bayonne doesn’t get as much tourist attention as it’s not located right on the coast, but has plenty for a curious traveler to explore. Points of interest include the town’s half-timbered architecture, the History Museum of Bayonne and Basque Culture, the Cathedral of St. Marie (a notable example of Gothic architecture), and quays or at the confluence of the river Nive along the Adour River.
-
Spanish Basque Country. A part of another country, but culturally and linguistically closely connected, Spanish Basque Country is less than an hour’s drive south of Biarritz. The region is home to famous cities like Bilbao with the Guggenheim Museum and San Sebastian (or Donostia) with its beautiful beaches and multiple Michelin-starred restaurants, but also stunning mountains and remote wilderness areas. Ask your rental car in advance if they permit crossing the border to Spain.
-
Pau. Known for its medieval fortifications and other well-preserved architecture, Pau is known as one of the most interesting cities in the interior of southern France. In addition to that, it is also a gateway to the nearby mountains and the beautiful Pyrenees National Park. The city is about 125 km (77 miles) east of Biarritz and can be reached by car in about 90 minutes.
