Airport travel guide

Rapidly growing over the last few decades, Montpellier might not be as famous as a tourist destination as other cities across Mediterranean France, but that is quickly changing. The city has plenty going on culturally and in terms of entertainment, and that’s not to mention proximity to some of the country’s loveliest beaches. Here are three suggestions for your trip:
- Place de la Comédie. Characteristically for the Mediterranean region, Montpellier’s main square is the beating heart of the city. Although it is named after a theater that no longer exists, plenty of other famous landmarks can be found in the square, not least the Montpellier Opera and the Three Graces fountain, while others, as well as some of the city’s finest restaurants, are just a short walk away.
- The Plant Garden of Montpellier. Dating back to the 16th century, this botanical garden, which doubles as an arboretum, is the oldest in all of France. Made up of a number of gardens and greenhouses that house both native and exotic plants, this is one of the nicest places to enjoy nature without leaving the city limits. The garden is just north of the city center and is open every day except on Mondays, with free admission for every visitor.
- Aigues-Mortes. Despite its foreboding name — it translates as ‘dead or still waters’ — Aigues-Mortes is one of the nicest little towns in the area. Known for its historical town walls, which remain in good shape to this day, as well as some of the region’s nicest restaurants, it also provides access to the Camargue Regional Nature Park, a bird-watching paradise. The drive from Montpellier to Aigues-Mortes takes only about 35 minutes.
