Airport travel guide

The main city of Southwest France, Toulouse is a fascinating, if somewhat underrated destination. As notable for its youthful, creative vibe as it is for its scenic streets and historic gems, it also offers access to the surrounding wine country and even the Pyrenees. These are four of the most notable attractions in and around Toulouse:
- Basilica of Saint-Sernin. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, this basilica was built in the place of another one that dated back to the 4th century, meaning that there has been a church standing at the same place for more than 1,600 years. An important example of Romanesque architecture, the basilica is notable for its sculptures and tympanums and is a world heritage site.
- Les Abattoirs. Located in a former slaughterhouse from which it gets its name, Les Abattoirs is perhaps nowadays the most notable modern and contemporary art museum in Southwest France. From permanent to rotating exhibitions, a sculpture park to many cultural events, and even graffiti in the courtyard, it’s a unique place to visit. Visit the official website to learn more about tickets and admission.
- Cité de l'espace. A scientific discovery center, Space City was opened in 2012 and has quickly become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Toulouse. Connected to the French aerospace industry that has its home in the city, the center is known for its interactive dome, planetarium, IMAX cinema, and even lifesize space rocket models.
- Cathedral of Saint-Etienne. Another important religious landmark, the cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Toulouse, a popular tourist attraction and one of the symbols of the city. Built on the site of a 3rd-century chapel, the cathedral was constructed in the 11th century but has been significantly altered over the last 1000 years, incorporating elements of Romanesque, Baroque, and French Southern Gothic styles and thus embodying the various aesthetic influences characteristic of Toulouse.
