Best known for its old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it punches way above its weight when it comes to historic landmarks and is also just a short drive away from a number of spectacular beaches and nature areas. Here are some interesting facts about it:

  • Dubrovnik has a fascinating history, dating back to the 7th century when it was an important trading center and naval power.

  • The Dubrovnik Old City Walls stretch for hover 1.5 miles and were built between the 13th and 16th century. Walking the circumference of the walls is one of the top tourist activities in Dubrovnik.

  • Dubrovnik is known for its stunning, crystal-clear water beaches and excellent seafood restaurants.

  • Dubrovnik is the filming location for “Kings Landing” in the famous Game of Thrones series.

  • The Old City of Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its well-preserved architecture ranging from Gothing to Baroque.

  • City walls. One of the main attractions of the Old Town of Dubrovnik is, in fact, the city walls that encompass it. Stretching for about 1.5 miles, the walls have three entrances/exits: the Customs House, Pile gates, and St. John’s (or St. Ivana) Fort. Many of Dubrovnik’s landmarks are inside the walls, and they are also the best place for enjoying the views of the Adriatic Sea below.
  • Sponza Palace. One of the oldest buildings in town, the Sponza Palace dates back to the 16th century; 150 years after its construction it was one of the very few structures in Dubrovnik that survived the earthquake of 1667. A mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles, the palace is right behind Luža Square, one of the busiest and culturally active parts of the city.
  • Mljet. A scenic island just off the coast of the mainland, Mljet is one of the most popular day trips from Dubrovnik. The island is known for its picturesque beaches, a national park of the same name, and opportunities for water sports. There is a ferry from Dubrovnik, but you cannot take a rental car with you; if you’d like to take your vehicle, you can take an hour’s drive north to the village of Prapratno and take a car ferry from there. If you go for the latter option, make sure to ask your rental car provider in advance if they permit it.
  • Maritime Museum. Dubrovnik was settled and became important thanks to its favorable location on the Adriatic Sea — it is what also made the city a prized possession of several empires. The best place to learn about this heritage is the city’s Maritime Museum, fittingly located practically on the coast in the southeastern corner of the Old Town.
  • Montenegro. One of the up-and-coming travel destinations of Europe, Montenegro is just a 50-minute drive east of Dubrovnik — and the quaint coastal towns Herceg Novi and Kotor are just a bit further. Unlike Croatia, Montenegro is not a member state of the European Union, but visitors of most Western countries can visit visa-free (it’s nonetheless a good idea to look up the policy regarding citizens of your country). There are a number of rental car companies that permit cross-border trips, but make sure to ask them in advance— and to check the rental conditions before booking.

We rented our car from Dubrovnik airport and drove to Plitvice Lakes National Park for a few days where we stayed Glumac Family B&B which was lovely. The park was incredible! Then we drove from the national park to Split where we spent a few days in a private Airbnb. From Split, we returned our car to Dubrovnik airport.

I rented a 2018 Yaris Hybrid with 133.000Km from Dubrovnik airport for one week. We were two people and we reached Rijeka, went to Plitsvitse lakes and then back to Dubrovnik airport. We traveled through the roads that had no tolls with an average speed of 60 Km/h. We enjoyed the road trip very much! Furthermore, since the car was a hybrid it had an average consumption of 4.1 liters per 100 Km despite the fact that we climbed a lot of mountains.

Got an Hyundai I30 with 17k on the clock, totally clean in- and outside. We went to Montenegro (Budva, Durmitor region). Only the price which you pay to pass the border is not fair. Should be way lower, think the car companies made mutual agreements on this to get more money from tourists. Best option is to buy one at the border (green card), way cheaper than fixing this trough a car company..

Fantastic Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, fun to walk around Kotor, Budva and Dubrovnik. Few public beaches. We found parking, but that would be a problem during the season. Significant prices for restaurants and cafes. We traveled 6 people. The car had 9 seats. There is definitely enough space for people and luggage, but in the narrower streets there is a problem to pass or park.

Lovely small airport with the car rental agencies easy to find (as long as you use apple maps, google maps isn't so great in Croatia). A car is great if you're travelling to different places outside of Dubrovnik (which we were). Don't hire a car if you're just staying round Dubrovnik as there's nowhere to park cheaply near the old city. Ubers are cheap and plentiful and there's a really good bus service.

We picked up the car at Dubrovnik Airport but used it to visit other places. We returned the car THEN visited Dubrovnik as Dubrovnik is not suitable for cars. We used the Shuttle Bus to travel into the town. The car was very useful in the more remote places and we used it a lot. I didn’t read the small print and although the price was good, there were mandatory extras that added 25% to the price. Overall I was satisfied as the car was almost new.

Its very useful to have a car in this area - there are lots of coastal locations to drive to and you can drive into the mountains. Its a bit limited without one really. I wouldn't drive into Dubrovnik itself as its busy and hard/expensive to park. We took the water taxi from Cavtat, which is really lovely - as nice as Dubrovnik. My only reservation is that the driving in this area can be tricky - on the smaller coast roads - and its not easy when youre in a new car and on a different side of the road in these locations. I was really careful but I think it would be really easy to scratch/skim the car (yourself or by someone else) and then its expensive as there is a 75 Euro admin charge plus any damage. I didn't take out a green card and was happy enough moving around the local area - for me it would have been £50 wasted but if you take one out, you can go further afield.

Stayed in an apartment outside Dubrovnik. Used Uber to go into city, but was able to see much of Croatia, parts of Bosnia Herzegovina and Montemengro with ease in comfort of own car. Only down side of travelling by road was delays at borders, but delays for coaches were two or three times as long. Cost of transfer to apartment from airport will have covered much of hire cost
