Avia Rent A Car at Dubrovnik Airport

Cons: Hidden ferry fee that was never mentioned when booking. Wasted money because we didn't end up going to island.

Cons: I didn’t like that Avia charged 12 euros because the car exterior was not freshly washed. It rained during my rental time and the car had “spots”, and Avia charged 12 euros for a “dirty” car. There were a lot of extra charges: 125 euros to drive across the border, 125 euros to drop off at a different location, 80 euros for a GPS unit (which Avia did not have even though I had reserved ahead of time).

Cons: Compulsory 35 Euro winter hire fee not included in rental rate and payable locally on arrival. It is mention in the small print of T&Cs but did not spot it when booking.

Cons: The company tried to scam me charing me for a damage that was already on the car when I picked it up. I had to argue and show them a video I took initially for them to drop it. Bad experience.

Cons: 2 things. They expected me to pick up a car right on time. However plane was late and I had to pay 50 Euro penalty for being late. And second. Deposit could be withdrawn only from Credit card. It is the first time in my life, when money couldn't be frozen on a debit card. This wasn't explicitly declared while booking and the only way to get a car was to pay full full insurance, which costed half of a rental price.

Cons: Our arrival was delayed by a thunderstorm over the airport which forced our aircraft to divert to Zagreb in the north of Croatia. We were not allowed to use mobile phones while refuelling, so could not inform Avia. Collection of the car was therefore delayed. The Avia staff were aware, but insisted on charging 40 Euros for late collection. They also charged 125 Euros for crossing the border to Montenegro, a hidden unexpected charge. Such extra charges damage their and your reputation.

Agent strongly tried to pursued us to agree to a lesser model car which our luggage would not fit into, or pay €190 extra to get the car I ordered from the neighbouring company. I outlined what I knew of the terms and conditions and stood firm in not accepting the options given to us. 3hrs later we got an upgraded car. Overall I felt this was a frustrating and unnecessary stress particularly as we had two small children with us.

Although one cover with a pocket in the second and third rows, and the problem is solved. The rear distance sensors were very helpful. They were not equipped at the front, and they were sorely lacking.
