Most of Croatia’s top tourism spots are located on the coast, but that doesn’t mean that the country’s interior has nothing going on. The heart of the traditional Slavonia region in the Northeast, Osijek is one of the most underrated Croatian destinations and offers everything from Habsburg heritage to access to pristine nature. These are three of the most interesting attractions in and around it:

• Tvrđa. Its name might not be easy for a foreigner to pronounce, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid it - the fortress of Tvrđa is arguably the most impressive building of Osijek, as well as the name of the larger complex that surrounds it. Located near the Drava river, the area is home to a number of museums and restaurants.
• Ante Starčević Square. Another place with a tongue-twister of a name — the area is known among locals simply as Trg — is also another busy and popular area of the city. Named after the so-called Croatian ‘father of the nation’ who hailed from Osijek, the square is home to a number of picturesque buildings like the Normann Palace.
• Kopački Rit. A protected zone situated alongside the border with Serbia, Kopački Rit is one of the largest wetlands in Europe -— and one of the most popular day trips from Osijek. The area is known for its great variety of plant and birdlife and can be explored on foot, by boat, or even on horseback. Kopački Rit is about 12 km (7.5 miles) northeast of Osijek and can be reached by car in 15 minutes.

Location

Osijek Airport is about 20 km (12.4 mi) southeast of Osijek. Motorway D2 and Vukovarska ulica are the main roads connecting the airport to the city.

The airport is quite small, but you’ll find a few eateries, coffee shops, and convenience stores, a gift shop, a newsstand, a duty-free outlet in the departures area, ATMs, a lost and found office, a first aid clinic, and a travel agency. Special assistance is available for travelers with reduced mobility, but you should contact your airline in advance if you’d like this service.

Nearest gas station

Ina gas station at Vukovarska ulica 306 can be reached in about 13 minutes from Osijek Airport and is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. There are other gas stations in and around Osijek.
