Faro, the gateway to the Algarve region of Portugal, is an ever-popular year-round destination for holidaymaking Brits year-round. And many of those choose to hire a car for their holiday. Many also own holiday homes and choose to hire a car each time they visit.
Chances are, if you haven't visited the Algarve, you know someone who has. You'll probably know that the region's beaches and sunny weather are what draws holidaymakers. Most visitors don't stay just in Faro but seek out the smaller towns, resorts, and beaches.
Tolls: Note that the A22 is a toll road. It is certainly possible to get around the region without using it. Your car hire supplier may offer you an electronic transponder with which you can pay the tolls. However, if you don't want to pay the extra fee that they request, it is easy to avoid the toll roads unless you are traveling further north to Lisbon or west to Spain.
Driving to Spain: The Spanish border is only roughly 60km from Faro Airport. You can take most hire cars from Faro Airport to Spain. However, note that there is an additional fee to cross the border which varies from company to company and that you must inform the hire company ahead of time.

- Albufeira. Small, scenic, and home to a number of beautiful public beaches, this is the Algarve that most foreign visitors have in mind before coming to the region. In addition to the aforementioned virtues, Albufeira is famous for the imposing Almoada Castle, Albufeira Archaeology Museum (home to a number of fascinating Arab and Roman artifacts), and some of the most exciting nightlife in the region.
- Alentejo. Bordering Algarve to the north, Alentejo is Portugal’s wine country. Best enjoyed at a slow pace, the bucolic region is home to a number of eco, farm, and winemaking tours. There are also two UNESCO World Heritage Sites — the historical cities of Evora and Elva — as well as a long, wild coastline.

I had a focus ST line easte which can be a little tricky to menovour through narrow streets and up through the dirt track mountains however if you stick to the main roads very easy, driving is sloe paced and relaxed around most parts of Portugal with a lot of traffic enforcement areas speed cameras

Generally travelling along the Algarve to the different beaches and sights. Car rental was an obvious choose to give the flexibility. What you could also do is offer road maps at the rental. 5 euros bought a Portugal and Algarve map. Give a 2 euro return of map and you could have a nice little extra earner. Even in the age of satnav, it is nice to get your bearings when In a new country.

The car I got was perfect to take us around most places while back in the Algarve (although I live in UK for a few years now, there's no place like home) - and my favourite places to revisit are Monchique and Silves, where the peacefulness and beauty of the mountains and countryside are just as close as the marvelous golden sand beaches of Alvor, in Portimão.

The Fort at Sagres was fantastic - well worth a visit, and a bargain at only €3 entrance. The cliffs above Praia da Luz are a fairly stiff climb but the views are amazing. The nature walk around the wetlands at Alvor are excellent - easy, flat going on boardwalks, so accessible by anyone. Plus the option of a lovely walk back along a beautiful beach.

Avoid the toll roads! An unnecessary expense if you are on holiday with time on your hands. It would only have saved me 10 minutes maximum on my drive to my resort, really not worth it.

It was a little difficult to find the rental desk as it is a small building placed in the middle of the car park.
The car was brand new and very clean.
The price was a bit too high, (just over €30 a day) but it was in the middle of July...

I’ve had lots of cars from Faro airport and very rarely had and problems with the suppliers. There can be a wait at busy times which is frustrating but unavoidable. the tolls are dear but worth it rather than use you holiday up driving. Really bad process for the fully electronic tolls. First they have to be paid in a post office and they donot appear for 2 days so if you use the one going back to the airport you will default. They also have a policy of always chasing tolls so they will contact the car rental company first who will charge £15 admin to look up who had the car on the date/time in question and pass it on to the toll company who will send you a late payment penalty so be sure you have sorted it first

One tip I would recommend is to hire the toll pass ‘you can get about without it but it seems like every 1/4 of a mile is a roundabout and it will drive you mad. Must see are albufera old town loule market make sure you haggle and faro old town and go up in the church to the roof to view the town plus there some fantastic beach’s and restaurants

EPI was good, the car was very basic with small engine, no air conditioning, but was one of the cheapest so you would need to upgrade if certain features are important to you. The EPI office was only a few minutes away, the trek to the meeting point probably took longer than the van journey to the offices. Overall it was a good experience.

Lovely trips around western Algarve and silver coast. The coastal route from Vila do Bispo via Sagres and to Aljezur was particularly beautiful and scenic with stunning unspoilt beaches, awe inspiring hillside scenery, quaint fishing villages snd surfing hotspots, with unique independent restaurants serving delicious authentic local food. Wonderful! Very easy and empty motorway driving and highly recommend the VisVerde credit card pre-authorised toll system. No stopping and no cashless and paid at end of rental. Very convenient and good value!

Arrived in Faro and transfer to the Autorent desk was very quick and smooth. Off airport office where we picked up the car was only 5 mins drive away. Then stayed in Carvoeiro and drove up to Monchique and Silves. Worth a visit. Car just excellent to drive and did not use a lot of fuel. Fantastic value for money.

We managed to tour the whole of Portugal and we could not have done it without renting a car. I have driven in Eurpope with a right handed car and managed fine but it was very different driving a left hand car on the right hand side of the road. As it was an automatic it made my life a lot easier and it took a few days to get used to but afterwards I was absolutely fine - even in Lisbon. I had to be extra careful in the car parks but otherwise was fine.

We didn't really need a car for most of the days. We needed a car to go to the accommodation and return to the airport. Perhaps we could have also managed the trip well without a car - but the car gives some good flexibility.
