- Albufeira. Located just a 40-minute drive west of Faro is one of the most scenic coastal towns in all of Portugal. Although best known for its beautiful seacoast, Albufeira has been inhabited since prehistory, a fascinating heritage that is honoured in the Municipal Archaeological Museum. The 12th century Almoada Castle (sometimes called the Castle of Paderne) is also worth a visit.

We had a relaxing time at Cabanas and Tavira. We liked the Little India and O Tonel Restaurants in Tavira. The apartment at Cabanas was great but the only good thing about the one in Tavira was the location - it was in need of modernistaion and refurbishment.

We stayed in a villa and didn’t really travel this time, Portuguese people on whole were polite and helpful. Poor experience at the airport however due to long queue in passport control made us miss our plane which then cost us a further £1300 to rebook tickets to get home.

Our apartment was in Ferragudo - nice and sleepy. So we were a bit unsure about a final lunchtime light-bite in central Faro - but the old town was lovely and made the last travelling day also part of the holiday.

snorkelled near Lagos, travelled to Aljezur round the Atlantic coast. This is really underdeveloped with wide expanses of rolling hills and gorgeous coastline. We travelled to Obidos which is breathtaking. Even had a medieval festival on so entertaining.

We visited places we had forgotten about or never visited previously - Faro and Tavira were both very interesting. We walked the coastal path between Carvoeiro and Praia da Marinha and were stunned by the beautiful scenery. A restaurant in Tavira was the best value meal we had (Executive Lunch at a carvery) and the meal we had in Foia would easily have graced any 5-star hotel.

We stayed in Carvoeiro, a beautiful village with an abundance of bars, restaurants and shops, but our favourite Restaurant is Bela Rosa, the food is excellent, the atmosphere is fantastic and the owners are si friendly, nothing is too much trouble.
We also went to Rio Famosa on an Eco boat trip around the park, very peaceful and the guide was very informative.

The fact of having our own car gave us so much freedom. This is the first time I have driven abroad and it allowed us to stay in a beautiful villa outside of the busy area of town. The fact is the villa was so much more beautiful than the ones in town and so much cheaper that the car paid for itself

Alvor beach and Luz Bay both great for beach days. Scuba diving with We Dive in Lagos was great diving in the Ocean Revival marine park. Sampled numerous restaurants in Alvor, notably The Thyme, Adega d’Alvor , Casa do Rio and Por do Sol.

We went on a boat trip to the caves with a company called royal nautica, it was amazing, we also spent a lot of time at caneiros beach which we love. Slide and splash & zoomarine were great. The Italian restaurants in carvoeiro, Villa Medici and Primavera, we’re both excellent too. O Barradas is also an excellent seafood restaurant in a lovely setting.

In the Algarve, we would recommend the local roads rather than the toll road A22. We saved on toll by using local roads, and saw much more of the area. Ok, there is more traffic but there is more real life too. We were surprised to find free street parking in most places, even in the centre of the villages. But make sure to check parking rules as we saw cars being fined for not having paid for parking.
