Located in the northeastern part of the country, Verona is just like most foreigners imagine an Italian city — steeped in history, impressive architecture, and delicious cuisine. Home to the University of Verona and, therefore, a large number of students, it is also an active and modern city. These are three of its many famous attractions:

• Castelvecchio. A large Gothic palace and fortress, the Old Castle is less ornate and more ascetic than similar buildings in other Italian cities, but somehow this only makes it more impressive. Built during the Middle Ages and later acquired by different empires, it has always been one of the symbols of the city. Nowadays, it also houses a museum with a lot of beautiful art from the late Middle Age and early Renaissance periods.
• Basilica of St. Zeno. Built between the 10th and 14th centuries, this minor basilica was named after the city’s patron saint (and not his namesake, the Greek philosopher). The building is most famous for having featured in Romeo and Juliet, the famous Shakespeare play set in Verona. Although lovely from the outside, its main attractions are located inside the church, namely the beautiful nave, the statue of the smiling St. Zeno, and the frescoes reaching a height of 10 meters (33 feet).
• Arena. When Romans completed building it in the year 30 AD, they could not have possibly imagined that Verona’s Arena would still be in use 2,000 years later. But although gladiators have been replaced by opera performers and contemporary musicians, that is exactly the case. Even if there’s not a performance scheduled during your visit, the impressive amphitheatre, which is the third-largest in the world, is open for tourists and definitely deserves a visit.

The two passenger terminals, one for arrivals and one for departures, are located right next to each other, and walking between them is easy.

Location

Verona Airport is about 10 km (6.2 mi) southwest of the city center. Motorways SS12 and SS62 are the main roads connecting the airport to the city.

Nearest petrol station

Q8 Caselle–Dalla Bernardina Brothers petrol station is located right outside Verona Airport, at Via Aeroporto, 20. It can be reached in about two minutes and is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. There are many other petrol stations nearby.
