Car Hire at Bologna Airport

Airport travel guide

A historic and sophisticated city, Bologna is one of the gems of northern Italy. Home to Europe’s oldest university, distinct architecture, an active cultural life, and according to some, the best cuisine in the country, it has something for every visitor to enjoy. Here are some of the most interesting attractions in and around it:

• Bologna Cathedral. Dominating its skyline, Bologna’s Cathedral — or Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Peter — is the most famous building in the city. Construction of the cathedral first started in the 10th century; it was later rebuilt numerous times until assuming its present form eight centuries later. A splendid example of Baroque architecture, the church is as impressive from the outside as it is from the inside.
• Archaeological Civic Museum. One of the most interesting museums in the city, it is the right place to learn about the ancient cultures that used to inhabit present-day Italy and the rest of the Mediterranean region. From Iron Age artefacts to Etruscan weapons, Roman vases, and Egyptian mummies, the museum has a truly rich collection of exhibits.
• International Museum and Library of Music. Another unique museum, it is the right place for classical music lovers. First opened in the 17th century and significantly developed over the years, the museum features portraits, musical instruments, and original scores, as well stories of such world-famous composers as Mozart, Vivaldi, Rossini, and Bach.
• San Marino. A separate, sovereign country that’s fully surrounded by Italy, San Marino is a fascinating place you might want to visit if you are in this part of the country. Despite what its name might suggest, San Marino is, in fact, landlocked, and quite mountainous, offering many stunning views and serpentine roads. The world’s oldest republic is also known for its many historical sites, excellent cuisine, and hospitable people. A drive from Bologna takes just under two hours and can be complemented with a trip to Ravenna, Rimini, Pesaro, or somewhere else on the nearby Adriatic coast.
