Airport travel guide

Something of an underappreciated gem, many travellers only know Bergamo as the location of Il Caravaggio Airport which has cheaper flights to Milan than the two other international airports in the region. While the neighbouring metropolis is clearly more famous, those who are in no rush and can give Bergamo a chance will discover a lovely town with medieval architecture, a special atmosphere, and a variety of interesting things to see and do. Here’s our pick of them:
- The Old Town. The upper, older part of the city is where most of Bergamo’s landmarks are located. Made up of awe-inspiring churches, cosy alleys, and old palaces, it offers endless opportunities for taking pictures or simply feeling like visiting another time. Many of Bergamo’s best restaurants are also located here. Another great experience is taking the cable car that connects the old town with the lower part of the city below.
- Venetian Walls. Built in the 16th century by the Venetian Empire which ruled Bergamo at the time, the historic fortifications that enclose the old town are a Unesco World Heritage site. Made up of four gates, more than 10 bastions, and 100 embrasures for cannons, the walls retain much of their historic magnificence and also offer impressive views of the countryside below.
- Andrea Bonicelli Mining Park. There are a number of very good history and art museums in Bergamo, but if you’re looking for something slightly different, this mining park in the village of Schilpario might be a good choice. Located in a valley of the Bergamasque Alps, it offers a tour of the former iron mines and an insight into the life of a local miner, some of whom started their work as young as 12 years old. After visiting the mines themselves, you can also visit the Ethnographic Museum of Schilpario which has exhibits from different eras of mining. Located about 65 km (40 miles) northeast of Bergamo, Schilpario can be reached in about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
