Airport travel guide

Home to so much more than just the leaning tower, Pisa is a classy and diverse destination. Located near the coast of the Ligurian Sea, this Tuscan city is characterized not only by its expressive architecture and delicious cuisine but also by having plenty of things to do and see — especially if you hire a car. Here’s our pick of the best attractions in and around Pisa:
- Piazza dei Miracoli. The beating heart of the city, the field of miracles is where the Torre Pendente, or the leaning tower, is located — but it also houses the Pisa Cathedral, the Monumental Cemetery, the Opera Palace and other architectural masterpieces. Admittedly, this part of the city can get quite crowded because of the large number of tourists, so coming very early in the morning can be a good idea.
- Natural History Museum. There are many great art museums in Pisa, but if you’re looking for something different, the Museo di storia naturale might be your pick. More than 500 years old, it keeps exhibitions on dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, ancient collections of insects and molluscs, and an aquarium. The museum is located about 13 km (8 miles) east of the city centre but can be easily reached by car.
- Cinque Terre. Located in the neighbouring Province of Liguria, the Cinque Terre are often considered five of the most picturesque villages in all of Italy. Squeezed between cliffs and the sea, the area is characterized by the colourful facades of its houses and relaxed pace of life — though if you’re looking for something more challenging, there are also a number of coastal hiking trails. Located about 110 km (68 miles) from Pisa, the Cinque Terre can be reached in less than two hours. Keep in mind that the area is quite hilly, so some previous experience of driving in the mountains is advisable.
- Foreste Casentinesi. A forest, a mountain range, and a national park, this picturesque nature area is shared by Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. Characterized by steep peaks and stunning views, the area also houses medieval monasteries and a historical arboretum. When hiking, you might get to spot a barn owl, a red deer, or a buzzard. Located 150 km (93 miles) east of Pisa, the national park can be reached in about 2 hours and 30 minutes. While it is possible to visit it as a day trip, the villages and towns inside the park also provide many accommodation options.
