Driver's license requirements
- Turkey recognizes foreign driver’s licenses from around the world if they are valid and if you’re visiting on a trip that’s shorter than six months. If you’re in Turkey for longer than that period or reside there permanently, you need to acquire a local driver’s license instead.
- If your driver’s license is printed in a non-Latin alphabet (Cyrillic, Arabic, etc.), you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP).
- Similarly, if your driver’s license doesn’t show your photograph, you might be required to have an IDP.
- Even if you have an IDP, you need to also carry your original driver’s license as you might be asked to show both.
- You must carry your driver’s license, not a copy, with you at all times.
- You need to have had your driver’s license for at least one or two years (depending on the supplier).
- Some rental car providers charge a young driver fee for drivers between the ages of 22 and 25 and a senior driver fee for drivers over the age of 65.
- You must be at least 21 years old to rent a car in Turkey.
- There may be additional requirements depending on the car provider and car category, so make sure to check the rental conditions before booking.

Turkey is bordered by Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan (via its exclave Nakhchivan), Iran, Iraq, and Syria. The border with Armenia is closed and there is only one place to cross the border into Syria (Bab al-Hawa). Most governments also advise against travel to Iraq.
Each of Turkey’s neighbors has its own visa policy. Depending on your citizenship, you may need a visa or may not even be permitted to cross the border. We strongly advise getting in touch with your Ministry of Foreign Affairs in advance to find out whether you can enter any specific country in the region. Generally speaking, Greece, Bulgaria, and Georgia are the most accessible neighbors of Turkey, but the ability to cross any specific border still depends on your citizenship and the visa policy of the specific country.
Even if you can visit a neighboring country, most car rental providers in Turkey do not permit crossing the border in a rental car. You can find the ones that do (e.g., between Thessaloniki or Sofia and Istanbul or between Trabzon and Georgia) by entering your car pick-up and drop-off locations in our website’s search.

We traveled around the whole country of Türkey in our rental car, and it kept us safe and comfortable the entire time. We are incredibly thankful for the vehicle we had because it allowed us to fulfill our dream of traveling around Türkey, and seeing all of the amazing sights that we've always dreamed about. We had a brand new car, so it was very clean and strong. We had to navigate around the busy streets of Istanbul, and it handled very well the entire time. It was also very spacious. It was able to accommodate our two children (ages 2.5 years and 7 months old), both who sat in car seats (that we brought), in addition to our massive amount of luggage. We were sad when we had to drop off our car, and we will always be thankful that it kept us safe while traveling around this beautiful country.

The driving was easier than expected, Turkish drivers are rather anarchistic, they are not much good at lanes and stop signs, but for the most part they do not drive too fast and they aren't out to kill you. In the south the roads were not overcrowded.
The mountain roads were spectacular, well maintained and generally wide enough for oncoming traffic to pass comfortably. There were great sights to see, it is a very beautiful country. Before you leave for Turkey get a good map and do some research on places to visit. You cant get maps there and there are no tourist offices.

Cappadoccia itself is great but people can be rude there especially in Goreme . Avanos was much better in there of nice people. Balloon rides we found for 150€ everyone else would charge 180-280€ every agent is different. But we met nice pilots. Quad bike Tour was good but again the guides are very rude. Avanos everything is half price compared to goreme. So renting a car is a better idea in cappadoccia. Also seeing the balloon at certain locations is so much better for pics thand riding it

comunication not clear. should always share the car rental phone number as well as discover agent phone number. we were given only the care rental phone number and when the rental company changed to a different one, same old number was shared not the new car company and that created confusion

As this was unlimited mileage, we decided on a couple of big day trips and smaller trips for the rest of the time. From Dalaman it is possible to visit Fethiye, Olùdeniz and Kaş which broke the trip up on the outward journey. We then put in a big trip to get back, but we had spent a reasonable amount of time at each place. Dalyan with its amazing yombs and up to the cool waters to enjoy a fresh trout lunch were also highlights.

If your going to sultan Ahmet, Taksim and crowded area I advise to keep the car parked and use Taxis, other than that the car is faster and better for your trips outside the touristic areas

Renting a car in Istanbul depends on what your needs will be. If you are staying in a touristic area (which was not our case, we go there for family), no need for a car. If you stay far from tourist attractions, especially on asian side, definitely rent a car. Since the ban of Uber, finding a taxi is quite hard especially at night and if you are not staying in one of the "interesting" points. For us, we will always book.

We traveled about 2000 km start from Istanbul to Bursa then Pamukkale then Cappadocia then to Ankara, and return to IST airport, the car was very nice comfortable and good maintenance(by enterprise).
We just have problem by alarm of "Adblue"
And it was not serious problem, I just added 20 liters of adblue (events tought couldn't charge back to enterprise because I haven' receipt/bill (it happen because I paid in cash at petrol Station and they didn't gave me the receipt or bill
