Airport travel guide

Located in Southeastern Turkey, Mardin feels very far from the beaten track of Turkish tourism, but that doesn’t mean there are no places to visit and enjoy here. Here are three suggestions for your visit:
- Mardin. The city that the Mardin International Airport serves is one of the main highlights of this part of the country. Inhabited for more than 4,000 years and historically connected to the Assyrian culture, Mardin is known for its unique architecture, with many buildings seemingly built on top of each other on a steep slope of a mountain. The city can also serve as a gateway for exploring the rest of the region.
- Diyarbakir. Known for its bazaars, tea houses, and houses of prayer, the largest of which, the Great Mosque, dates back to the 11th century and is one of the most beautiful in the country, Diyarbakir has all the ingredients for being a very authentic travel destination. A melting pot of culture and languages, the city is only a 90-minute drive northwest of Mardin.
- Zerzevan Castle. Now mostly in a ruined state, Zervazan Castle served, over the previous centuries, both as an Assyrian fortress (when it was known as Kinabu) and a central shrine for Mithraism, an ancient Roman mystery religion, thus embodying the fascinatingly diverse history of this part of the world. Located about halfway between Mardin and Diyarbakir, the castle is just off the D950 which connects the two cities.
