Airport travel guide

Both the northernmost and easternmost of the Canaries, the island of Lanzarote is naturally known for its beautiful beaches, but also for the otherworldly, moonlike landscapes that make up much of its interior. Getting a rental car is the surest way to explore all sides of this unique destination. These are three of Lanzarote’s most interesting attractions:
- Arrecife. Located on the southeastern coast, Arrecife is the island’s capital city and where you’ll find many of the best things to do on Lanzarote. Many visitors use it as a hub for exploring the rest of the island, but landmarks like its beautiful promenade, the Castle of St. Gabriel, the International Museum of Contemporary Art, and Temático statue park make it a fun destination in its own right.
- Timanfaya National Park. Taking up a significant portion of the island’s southwestern coast, Timanfaya is arguably the best place to enjoy the impressiveness and sheer strangeness of Lanzarote’s nature. Created in a series of volcanic eruptions that lasted for six years, the park is known for the otherworldly colors of its landscape, a quality visitors center, and the use of geothermal energy to cook the local Lanzaroteño cuisine.
- Cueva de los Verdes. Another natural wonder, the Green Cave is a network of underground tunnels formed by a lava river and now accessible to visitors (there is a tour you can take). The name comes from the green hue that is made by the reflection of the cave’s ceiling in the water. There are a number of other lava tubes in Lanzarote, most of which, like Cueva de Los Verdes, are on the northern part of the island.
- Teguise. The former capital of the island until it was replaced by neighboring Arrecife in the 19th century, Teguise is home to a surprising multitude of landmarks. These include the Santa Barbara Castle which houses the Piracy Museum, the Lagomar Modern Art Museum, and the fascinatingly strange rock formations of Ciudad Estratificada. The drive from Lanzarote Airport only takes about 20 minutes.
