- Castelli Romani Regional Park. Encompassing Lake Albano which was created by a now-extinct volcano, as well as a protected area to its east, Castelli Romani is one of the nicest nature regions in Greater Rome. In addition to forests and gardens, the park is known for its steep hillsides where colorful houses seem to be built on top of one another, as well as several lavish villas. The drive from Ciampino Airport takes only about 30 minutes.
- Anzio. Located on the Mediterranean coast, the city of Anzio has historically been known as one of the best places for seafood in this part of Italy. While that reputation remains thoroughly deserved, nowadays it is also a popular gateway to the surrounding beaches, as well as a jump-off point to several nearby islands. The drive from Ciampino will take about 55 minutes.
- Tivoli. One of the most scenic towns of the Lazio region, Tivoli is famous for being the location of three gorgeous villas - Adriana, d’Este, and Gregoriana. The former two are world heritage sites and are known, respectively, as the former residence of Roman emperor Hadrian and as a place of beautiful fountains and frescoes. The drive from the Ciampino Airport to Tivoli takes around 40 minutes.

We spent most of our time in Italy in and Basilicata, which are primarily rural areas. This made driving easier with the midsized SUV we were driving. We loved spending time in a less travelled part of Italy. We stayed for a time in Lecce, enjoying the historic city center, plus spending a day in Gallipoli swimming in the crystal clear ocean water.

Be prepared for a different driving style in Italy. Flash of headlights is like horn and does not mean come, as here. Drivers usually give way more readily than in UK; but sometimes not. be aware.

Driving in Rome looks mad. We avoided it by hiring a car at the airport then driving out to the hills. There are lovely hilltop villages only an hour or so northeast of Rome.
