Airport travel guide
Located about 50 km (31 miles) southwest of Reykjavik, Keflavik Airport is the main air hub of Iceland. But while most travelers pick up a rental car and go straight to the capital, there are plenty of interesting things to see and do in the immediate vicinity of the airport. Below are four suggestions. If you plan to spend some time in the capital in the colder months, then don't miss this guide to Reykavik in winter.
- Keflavik. Keflavik is not only an airport, it is also the small town where it is located. Although not usually listed among Iceland’s main attractions, it is actually a fun place to visit, especially for nature lovers as many whale and dolphin watching tours leave from the city’s harbor. Most whales and orcas can be seen during the summer months, but some species such as white-beaked dolphins and porpoises can be seen throughout the year.
- Blue Lagoon. A large, artificial hot spring, the Blue Lagoon is one of the country’s main attractions — if you’ve ever seen a tourism ad for Iceland, the odds are that the Blue Lagoon was featured in it. Rich in minerals and surrounded by primeval rocky scenery, the lagoon is the perfect place for a long relaxing day, especially in winter when there is a clear contrast between the temperatures of water and air. Located only 20 km (12 miles) southeast of Keflavik Airport, the Blue Lagoon can be reached by car in about 20 minutes.
- Reykjanes Geopark. A UNESCO-designated area comprising a large portion of the peninsula where Keflavik is located, Reykjanes Geopark is best known for the Bridge Between Continents. A pedestrian bridge, it demarcates the line between the European and North American tectonic plates that meet under the peninsula. The geopark is also home to many other volcanic and geologic peculiarities and sites. The park’s visitor center is located in the town of Keflavik.
- Hafnarfjörður. Although primarily known to many as a southern suburb of Reykjavik (which is therefore on the way from the airport to the capital), Hafnarfjörður, like Keflavik, can be an interesting destination in its own right. The city’s well-preserved historical center is home to many well-preserved traditional buildings, and you can also visit the municipal museum, the Hafnarfborg art gallery, or even join a tour that takes you through the surrounding lava rocks while introducing you to the local elven folklore.

FAQ
Will the rental car have snow tires?
Many car rental companies in Iceland include snow tires in the winter while others charge an additional fee for winter tires. If the car is equipped with winter tires, it is mentioned in the car specifications in the search results.
Is off-road driving possible with a rental car in Iceland?
It is possible to drive on gravel roads in Iceland, but not truly off-road. Many companies require that you purchase special insurance for this, such as gravel and tire and glass. You may also only be able to do this in a 4x4 vehicle. Make sure to ask the car rental company about this and get their permission. If you don’t, any coverage will be voided and you may find yourself with a hefty bill to pay.
Can I rent a car with a Brazilian driver's license?
This depends on which company you are renting with. Some companies at Keflavik Airport require anyone without an EU driver’s license to have an International Driving Permit (IDP). Other companies only require that your license be printed in the Roman alphabet. Be sure to check the rental conditions to find out what the company you intend to rent from requires before booking.
Is damage from sand or ash covered under the standard collision damage waivers?
No, damage resulting from sand, dust, and ash is not covered under the CDWs of the rental companies in Iceland. This mainly is the result of volcanic eruptions. Most rental companies offer the opportunity to purchase extra coverage for this. If you do not purchase this coverage, be sure to keep abreast of the forecast.
Can I rent a 4x4 vehicle at Keflavik Airport?
Yes, it is possible to rent a 4x4 vehicle for use on Iceland's unpaved roads. Check the 4x4 under the Car Specifications on the left-hand side of the search results to see the available 4x4 vehicles.
How long does it take to get from the rental offices outside the airport to the airport's terminal?
If your rental company is located outside the airport, allow for at least an hour in total between arriving to drop off the car and reaching the terminal. It may take less time, but you should err on the side of caution.

We had a load of fun on this trip! Car was amazing on gas, and great on the road. There was an incident where my peer had his passport stolen, and they were only able to receive their temporary one 1 hr before the flight, and because that was the time the car was suppose to be brought back it was almost impossible to make the flight for them. So with less than an hour to spare, and the rental car had been returned, instead of having my friend wait for a shuttle which could’ve been 20 minutes or more, one of the workers personally gave my friend a ride back to the airport, where then he was able to join us at the gate for our flight!

Having a rental car really opened up options for our trip to Iceland. Even if you stay in the center of downtown Reykjavik and walk most places, one single bus trip to Blue Lagoon or anywhere outside the city will end up costing the same as having a car available to you 24/7. Driving was easy and convenient and parking was not expensive - just be sure to get the right vehicle for conditions, time of year, and destination, keeping in mind that some areas of the island may not be accessible in winter during/following storms. Speed limits are quite low due to wind gusts and other regular weather conditions year round.

We spent 8 days in Iceland, beginning in Reykjavik, then went north. Without a rental car, we would not have been able to see & do all that we did. We hiked Glymur Falls, then explored Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the Westfjords before returning south to loop the Golden Circle, finishing up again in Reykjavik. We even did a quick loop of the Reykjanes Peninsula before flying back out. The car allowed us to explore at our own pace and deviate as we wished.
Had a camping van been available when we booked our trip, I may have rented one of those instead for the room (there were 5 of us) and the flexibility of camping for some of the trip. But the car was fuel efficient and easier to navigate the narrower roads in parts of the Westfjords.
If you like raw beauty and getting away from the crowds, I would highly recommend following the route we took. (https://www.kimkim.com/c/7-days-exploring-the-snaefellsnes-peninsula-westfjords-and-golden-circle#map) We'll definitely return to Iceland and explore other parts of the island, most likely during the fall.

Having a car is essential if you want to explore on your own. Gas prices are very high compared with the States, so plan your travel as best as you can to avoid wasting it. Try biking locally, or using scooters if you're in the city. Most of the really cool outdoorsy stuff is on F-roads, so be sure to get the appropriate car for where you want to go, or find a safe place to park and get a shuttle. Though there is also great hiking right off the Ring Road.

If it's June, you don't need an offroad car to enjoy the beauty of Iceland. Fill your tank full at the start or at the end of day trip. Keep your eyes open for exceptional paytoll (like tunnels). Parking it's very easy, just remeber to pay for it when it's needed. Use your car to travel around, but as soon as possible, try to leave and go hike.

We did the Golden Circle at the beginning and visited Gullfoss, Geysir Hot Springs, Faxi and Kerid Crater. We also enjoyed the walk from Thingvellir Visitor Center to Oxararfoss. Snæfellsjökull National Park was our next stop and the coastal scenery was amazing. We took the Baldur Ferry from Stykkishólmur to Brjanslaekur and toured the North Eastern part of Iceland. We made a stop in Siglufjörður to visit the Herring Era Museum. We enjoyed our visit to the Botanical Garden in Akureyri. Goðafoss is a spectacular waterfall not far from Akureyri. There is a toll tunnel on the way to the waterfall and you can pay online in advance. Lake Mývatn area is beautiful and you could easily spend a day there visiting the thermal pools/vents near Hverir, the Hverfjall crater and the Krafla volcano and lava fields. On our way to East Iceland, we stopped at the magnificent Dettifoss and Selfoss waterfalls. The scenic drive along the eastern coast of Iceland was quite memorable. The Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in South Iceland and the zodiac boat tour was absolutely awesome. Not far from the lagoon is the Svínafellsjökull glacier and you can get up close to the edge of the retreating glacier. Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon is another great stop and breathtaking. On the way back to Reykjavik, be sure to visit Reynisdrangar, Hálsanefshellir Cave and Dyrhólaey. When in Reykjavik, I also recommend hiking up the Fagradalsfjall Volcano not far from the capital and then spend a couple hours in Blue Lagoon to relax your body. If you need to get off the ring road during your visit in Iceland, I strongly suggest renting a 4x4 SUV because most mountain roads are not paved and have many potholes. During fall and winter, mountain passes can be covered with ice and snow as well. Drive safe and watch for sheep crossing the road.

We rented an automatic Suzuki Vitara (4x4) and we were able to navigate the full Ring Road and some F Roads with no issues or concerns at all. We did the Diamond Circle, Golden Circle, and explored the Snaefellsnes Peninsula during our trip. I highly recommend renting a 4x4 as the weather is unpredictable (wind, snow, rain, ice) and some of the most beautiful places are located via an unpaved road.

The attendant was helpful and the car was in above average condition. It could have been even cleaner and the driver-seat window could not close properly. It would not rest properly within the window frame of the car.

Iceland pays huge dividends on time invested in preparing and undertaking a visit. To fully access and enjoy this amazing country and its fine people one needs to spend time in preparation. Iceland is a rugged place and sparsely inhabited. But tucked away throughout the country are great towns, sights, activities and places to experience. So one needs to do some research. That includes indentifying the right kit, planning an itinerary and renting a sufficiently robust vehicle as we did throught Icerental4x4.

It's a smooth service. There was an individual at the front of arrivals with a sign for our rental company. They have a list of people they are expecting, they then take you by shuttle to the car rental location. It is a very short drive from the airport. The return is the same. They shuttle you back to the airport. Our rental company made returns a priority which was nice, so you didn't have overly worry about adding to much extra time to drop off the car.

You 100% NEED winter tyres and a 4x4 if you plan on driving in the winter in Iceland. Some people didn’t and we saw them broken down many times. Also if you can, get a car with sat nav built in to save your phones battery and data. A car is a brilliant way to get around to the various attractions and sights that Iceland has to offer. Be very careful driving around in the winter as weather conditions can change so adversely in no time at all.

Great fun driving in the snow and ice. We had a 4x4 which helped and the tyres had ice studs for extra traction. Not many roads to confuse in routes, although Reykjavik city centre was a bit confusing.

Renting a car makes good sense if you are not staying in Reykjavik, or intend to visit some of the more remote locations. During winter months you have to be prepared for driving in some pretty adverse weather so pay close attention to the roads.is site before starting your journey - this will tel you in pretty much real time which roads are closed and which others are potentially hazardous. Icelanders are polite & helpful, so in this respect driving is a pleasure compared to trying to the same in the UK!

We spent a few days travelling around southern Iceland. Lovely country, amazing landscapes and very relaxed atmosphere.
There were 7 of us in a 7 seater 4x4. 2 kids sat in the back pop up seats which were fine for them but not much leg room for an adult. The rest of the 4x4 was very comfortable & spacious.

You need a car to get around Iceland, and while there are many car rental providers at the airport when you get there, there's a really long line most of the time. It is best to prebook your car before you even fly to Iceland

A car is the only reasonable way to visit Iceland, so yes. Car rentals in general and also fuel are very expensive though. But considering that a shuttle from and back to the airport (and everything else in Iceland) is also very expensive, a car is a convenient option.
Discovercarhire should take notice that Keflavik is Reykjavik's international airport, and include Keflavik's cars in Reykjavik's searches. When I seached Reykjavik I got "no cars available".
