Keflavik Airport is the main international airport in, and gateway to, the island nation of Iceland. It is located roughly 50 kilometers west of the capital of the country, Reykjavik.
Let's face it, most don't travel to Iceland to spend a week in the city. Instead, they travel for the out-of-this-world nature of the island. Thus, is no surprise that most travelers choose to hire a car for their trip. And as Keflavik Airport is the most popular entry point, there is a huge selection of hire companies from which to choose.
While you could take some form of public transportation to get to Reykjavik and hire a car there after visiting the city for some time, it is probably better to just hire a car at the airport. In addition to blue whales, humpbacks, and orcas, you might also be lucky to spot several types of dolphins. Different species have different migration patterns, but generally the summer months — June, July, and August — are the best time of the year to go whale watching in Keflavik.
- Blue Lagoon. One of the most popular attractions of Iceland, the Blue Lagoon is just a 20-minute drive from Keflavik Airport — if you plan to visit, it makes more sense to do it right away than traveling to Reykjavik and then back south. Unlike some hot springs in Iceland, this attraction is man-made, but that doesn’t take anything away neither from the lagoon’s health properties nor the overall enjoyment of the experience.
- A bridge between continents. Iceland is located on two tectonic plates — this fact is the source of the considerable volcanic activity it frequently experiences and is also responsible for many of the island’s otherworldly landscapes. So if you cross this pedestrian overpass which is a 20-minute drive south of Keflavik, you’ll technically be walking between Europe and North America. To find the bridge, follow Highway 425 until you’ll see a sign on your left.

Drove the Golden Circle in Winter. Visited the Frioheimar tomato restaurant near Reykholt which was superb! Highly recommend the Safari Quads ATV tour in the hills around Reykjavík which was excellent. Stayed one night in the incredible Bubble Hotel Iceland in Hrosshagi, highly recommend!

Iceland is a great country to visit. Stunning scenery everywhere. We were disappointed that the ‘Blue Lagoon’ had to be closed due to seismic activity but found ‘The Secret Lagoon’ which was excellent. Pingvellir National Park is a really ‘not to miss’ place to visit. Restaurants in Selfoss were great.

Amazing place to visit
In 3 days we managed to explore so much yet still want to return to see more!
Recommend hiring a car to explore the Golden Circle route as well as driving to the South to the town of Vik where you can see great waterfalls on the way.
Top restaurants I would recommend would be Food Cellar, Rok and the Lava restaurant within the blue lagoon.

It was cheap.
The car wasn’t in great condition and an older model, having said that it performed very well in the snow and ice.
They tried to charge us extra for a crack in the windscreen but luckily we had taken plenty of photos at pick up and they were very happy with that.
We would use it again because the price was very competitive.

Great road trip. Selfoss town is great as is Vik, Laugavatn and Grindavik. Take care on the roads in winter and DO NOT STOP unless in designated stop places. Try out the local swimming pools - they are great for meeting local people not other tourists.

We hired a small Hyundai and the car was amazing on the roads even after a few inches of snow. One of our favourite hidden gems we visited was Barnafoss a beautiful waterfall with a sad myth of two brothers. We travelled the Golden circle with many beautiful stops in route. The Blue Lagoon was fantastic, although initially created by accident surroundings on an evening visit is truly beautiful and also a prime spot in the area to spot Aurora. We were lucky to see her 3 nights in a row. All I can say about the locals are they are so friendly and welcoming and also the drivers are so patient and courteous. After arriving home we have already been on to search for a return visit.
