By a renting a car, me and my partner saved so much money on travel. We did the golden circle tour ourselves without booking an excursion and going on the coach which coast £200 plus, we just got some snacks and hit the road (the drive around the golden circle tour, one of the best drives of my life. The scenary was amazing, we could stop off when ever we wanted, we could leave whenever we wanted without having to wait for people to get back onto the coach. Night times, we put a location in our phones and drove around looking for the northern lights. Was definitely worth getting a car

no car needed for the city, however who wouldn't want to drive around exploring the fantastic landscape under their own steam! Coach travel looked miserable - renting a car is the only way!

You need a car to get around Iceland. Trips with tour companies are overpriced and not good value for money, in my opinion. Remember that the top speed on dual carriageways is 90 kph (about 55mph), with some urban areas being just 30kph (less than 19mph). There is pretty much zero tolerance on Drinking and Driving, with just one of the local standard (weak at 2.3%) beers putting you over the limit. Thankfully, we had kids with us, so I didn't drink at all and only found out later how stringent the law was with regards to D&D.

If you're planning on doing and self-driven travelling in Iceland (highly recommended, unless you absolutely insist on a tour package that may provide a coach service), then a car rental is essential. You can get most places (at least the touristic places) in a small vehicle, and a 4x4 isn't essential. You'll definitely enjoy the experience much more if you rent!

If you want to travel around iceland, a car is almost essential, especially in winter.
Definitely spend some time searching for the hidden info on deposits and see if you can increase your credit limit accordingly.

We had a wonderful visit to your beautiful country. The people are very friendly and good-natured. We thoroughly enjoyed every place we visited and would highly recommend the adventure to other people who are thinking of a vacation there. We planned our own vacation for about a year ahead of time which turned out to be a real asset. If you have the time and are comfortable about driving in a foreign country, I would recommend renting a car as it gives you the opportunity to tour with-out any time restraints.
