Airport Car Rental

The gateway to Far North Queensland, Cairns has long served as a popular tourist destination. A gateway not only to the Great Barrier Reef but also the ancient rainforest of the Daintree, the cool hinterlands of Atherton, and the road to the remote Cape York Peninsula, Cairns holds the keys to some of the country's most remarkable natural wonders.

  • Great Barrier Reef. A unique ecosystem and one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef is the main attraction of Northern Australia. Whether you visit one of the islands, go scuba diving or snorkeling, or simply enjoy the views, this is one attraction that is not to be missed. A number of reef tours take off from Cairns, as well as some of the surrounding towns and villages.
  • The Daintree. Where the forest meets the reef, the Daintree Rainforest some 100km north of Cairns is one of Australia’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. The rainforest here is estimated to be over 135 million years old, some of the last remnants of the vast forest that once covered the entire continent of Australia. Its striking beauty, unfathomable age, and incredible diversity make it one of the country's most sought-after destinations.
  • The Atherton Tablelands. A high plateau behind coastal Cairns, the Atherton Tablelands is renowned for its lush rainforest, incredible waterfalls, native fauna, and local produce. The towns of Millaa Millaa, Yungerburra, and Kuranda and the waterfall circuit are just some of the highlights of this spectacular region.
  • Cape York. The trip to the most northern point of Australia is no easy feat. One of the country's final frontiers, traversing this untamed wilderness makes for a challenging journey, one where self-sufficiency is demanded. Rough dirt roads, unpredictable weather and long stretches between outpost towns Cape York is a true adventure but one that will reward travelers with astonishing natural beauty.
  • National Parks. While the reefs and beaches are undoubtedly amazing, there’s also a lot of nature to enjoy away from the coast. Cairns is surrounded by an absolute wealth of nature preserves a couple of hours' drive (or less) from the city. These include the Kuranda State Forest and Hann Tableland National Park to the north; Danbulla National Park to the west; and Gadgarra, Wooroonooran, Tully Falls, and Tully Gorge National Parks to the south. The most adventurous will also try to travel to the truly wild and pristine national parks of northernmost Queensland, though reaching these parts require a lot of planning and the help of a tour or a guide.
  • Cairns Botanic Gardens. Though there are a lot of truly tropical areas and nature preserves within a day’s ride of Cairns, it’s also possible to enjoy true forest without leaving the city. Divided into different sections, like the Mangroves and Rainforest Boardwalks and the Aboriginal Plant Use Garden, the area also has both saltwater and freshwater lakes and is home to a large number of tropical birds.

Location

Cairns Airport is about 6 km (3.7 mi) from the city of Cairns. National Highway 1 passes by the airport and takes travelers either to Cairns city itself or north to Kuranda or Highway 44 which leads to the coastal destinations of Palm Cove and Port Douglas.

There is no need to worry about toll roads unless you plan a road trip that includes traveling south to Brisbane or the states of New South Wales or Victoria. See their respective articles for more information about how to pay for the tolls.

Services and facilities

There is a small collection of restaurants, cafes and bars within the airport, as well as stores, and a duty-free outlet in T1. There are also ATMs, lounges, an on-site hotel, a currency exchange, and spa. You’ll find self-service luggage lockers next to the T2 car park. The airport is well-equipped for travelers with reduced mobility. You can find more information on the airport's official website.

Port Douglas was well worth the drive for the day. Palm Cove was very quiet. Dundees restaurant on the wharf was worth a visit. The Kuranda SkyRail and scenic railway are a must, but go up on the train, then you are free to return on the Skyrail whenever you are ready. Food is questionable at Kuranda. Eat before you go or after you get back.

Port Douglas Markets on a Sunday. We stayed at Trjbity a beach for the week - we find they this is a beautiful location and a great base as opposed to Cairns City. We walked from Clifton Beach to Palm Cove, had a late breakfast and walked back via the beach. Babinda Boulders and the Babinda Bakery. The Cairns Botanical Gardens - definitely worth a visit - it was also free and amazing art displays in the tanks. We also visited Yorkys Knob, Holloways and Mechans and spent a day in the city doing some shopping. We love Cairns and surrounding areas and see more each visit.

We hired a car for our trip to Port Douglas where we stayed for 3 nights. We also drove to Daintree Rainforest and caught the Ferry there and back in our car. Very efficient and easy to arrange and a great way to go self exploring. We found this to be more cost effective for us instead of booking for a tour and bus. Also visited to Solar Whisper tour which was right near the entrance to the Ferry ride and taken out on a solar powered boat to spot wildlife and crocodiles.

Cairns skyrail and train . No islands as we have done many before here and OS . But would certainly recommend one island or reef trip .

While Bargain Car Rentals was not at the airport, the process of getting to the place was not very difficult. The rates provided were reasonable and the staff were very helpful and friendly. I would suggest that Bargain Car Rentals put up a sign within the airport or somewhere outside with contact details so that fellow travellers would be able to get in touch and get their cars quicker without having to look around and try to find their way in a new environment.

Having a hire car gave us the freedom to go where we wanted and when we wanted. Some days we chose to stay longer at places or our accommodation and other days we left early. You definitely want a car in Cairns to venture out to some of the regional towns. Platypus viewing was amazing, we saw plenty of platypus, tree kangaroos and turtles. A random drive out of town resulted in a crocodile cruise down the daintree river. Unplanned and spontaneous experiences only possible when you self-drive.

Hired an MG which was small but very spacious. We were a family of 4 and had lots of space. We travelled to Cape Tribulation across the Daintree River Crossing. Mosman Gorge, Port Douglas, Karunda Village and all around Cairns. We did quad biking at Karunda rainforest adventures, my son did go karting by Smithfield’s shopping centre and went on a Great Barrier Reef tour with Reef Magic which was amazing. We stayed approx 10 minutes away from Cairns central and it was really handy having the car. I would definitely recommend hiring a car while in Cairns as there is so much to do in and around the Tropical North.

Very handy to have transport in Cairns, the roads are easy to navigate and not very busy (like Brisbane) streets easy to find, weather is hot and muggy and walking is exhausting. It also means your accommodation doesn’t need to be in central Cairns. Driving up the coast to port Douglas is lovely, with a car you can stop at any spot you wish, and leave when you wish.

We used the car as a mean of transfer from airport to resort. Used it to do some shopping so we had food available back at our room and for tours we did. Went to waterfront bar and grill for dinner. Great staff and lovely food. The aquarium was fun to visit in Cairn and we did a day trip to Kanundra. But wasn't impressed as since covid the town really only operates Thursday to Sunday and we went on a Monday. We did see the butterfly sanctuary while there and it was very good.

Cairns and the surrounding area is beautiful, but you need transport to explore it fully. Cairns City is easy to get around with interesting sites and activities. We also took the heritage train to Kuranda which is a spectacular trip with waterfalls, spectacular scenery and amazing engineering achievements. Snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef is a must-do and we found a reasonably priced tour. We hired a car on two occasions to get to the Tablelands and Port Douglas. Well worth the time and effort.

We rented from Cairns Airport and did a week in the area. Fabulous, visiting the beaches of Trinity, Palm Cove and Port Douglas and the Mossman Gorge. Drove for a night in Mission Beach, very quiet not much there. Next on to Townsville and Magnetic Island; didn’t take the car across, just did a day trip by ferry which was more than enough. Next we drove to Airlie Beach which we loved and did a day trip to the Whitsundays. We dropped the car off at Prosperine Airport just 30 min drive from Airlie. A lovely small airport and all very easy. It was enough driving and the perfect trip. Fell in love with the hire car. Sooo comfortable and perfect.

We visited Cairns for one week. It was great hiring a car as each day we could travel at our own pace. Pleasant drive to Palm Cove which was very windy. Port Douglas is a must too. There was a lot less traffic than on the Gold Coast and we found the drivers curtious. We enjoyed the local restaurants and there was a lot of variety from Indian , Thai and cosmopolitan.
