Driving licence requirements

  • Italy recognizes foreign driving licences if they are written in a Latin alphabet and if you’re visiting on a trip that’s shorter than six months. If you’re visiting on a longer trip or if you’re a permanent resident of Italy, you need to acquire a local driving licence.
  • If your driving licence is in another alphabet (e.g., Cyrillic or Arabic), you need to have an International Driving Permit (IDP).
  • Even if you have an IDP, you still need to also provide your valid driving licence from your country
  • You must carry your driving licence, not a copy, with you at all times. 
  • You need to have had your driving licence for at least two years.
  • Some car suppliers charge a young driver fee for drivers between the ages of 22 and 25 and a senior driver fee for drivers over the age of 65.
  • There may be additional requirements depending on the car supplier and category, so make sure to check the terms and conditions before booking.

Crossing Borders

Italy is bordered by France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia, as well as San Marino and the Vatican City, two enclaves inside it. France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia are all members of the Schengen Area like Italy, meaning that the entry requirements for these four countries are the same as for Italy. The microstates of San Marino and Vatican City are not members of the Schengen Area, but their entry requirements are the same as those for Italy.

Great experience- Personal boat trip up lake como. Brillant find of a gluten free restaurant ( all the menu) in Pisa. Grano libero . Amazing views from the tower , well worth the climb Massa Marittima wonderful medieval village with brillant Enoteca ll Bacchino and hotel cash Aurora . Tuscany was all i dreamed it would be. Stay in the villages rather then main cities , they are beautiful and quieter. Lake Maggiore late sept/ early October very quite and more beautiful then Como ( just my opinion)

We picked the car up in Naples. We drove to our holiday let on the Amalfi coast. The car had a sat-nav although we could have used our iPhone nav aids. The car had aircon which was essential as it was fairly hot. The roads on the Amalfi coast are quite narrow and hug the coast. There are scooters weaving in and out of traffic and large buses that take up a large amount of space. In short, driving on the Amalfi coast is not for the faint hearted. Despite this having the hire car enabled to access a number of sights such as Herculaneum, Pompeii, Ravello, Amalfi, Positano without having to use public transport or taxis. It also made visiting restaurants and shopping for daily supplies far easier. Our Holiday Let had a private car park which was very handy.

Driving in Italy felt good and easy. The traffic wasn’t bad and I would say better than in UK. Motorway/highway in Italy is paid (not too expensive in my opinion). Be aware of ZTL (you can’t drive there unless you have permission) in places like Pisa, Florence etc. We drove from Venice to the heart of Tuscani which I definitely recommend to see beautiful countryside, hills, famous places, beaches and lot more. More time you can spend there better!

Great road trip from North to South of Italy....HOWEVER....DO NOT RENT AN ELECTRIC CAR AS THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH CHARGING STATIONS!!! Most of them are in a car park that you have to pay for. Normal charging takes nearly 3 hours so wasted sooo much time waiting for charge! Never again! Motorway chargers are faster but more are needed. We do not yet have the infrastructure for electric cars. Range anxiety is very real and takes over the holiday enjoyment. Except Italian pizza which is just THE BEST!!!!

Stayed in Lake Garda for two weeks and it is a stunning place. Took some trips out to Limone , Malcesine, Bardolino and Lazise and also San Zeno de Montagne. Great restaurants in Garda town, one being Casa Lady Garda. Watersports at Lezise were great for the sporty kids.

Italy is super as a destination, but expensive for restaurants and Alcohol. Alcohol is very reasonable in super markets, but the price gouging is evident in restaurants and bars. Not just the airport's or tourist spots. All providers seems to be doing it. Left a bad feeling!! Expect a 500ml beer to cost 5-8 euro. Small bottle of beer at Airport...300ml 7€

Pompeii brilliant. Sorrento ok. Herculaneum very good. Paestum brilliant. Naples dirty and didn't feel safe. The Naples to Sorrento trains were packed, hot and slow but very cheap. Overall I can't believe how dirty and covered in rubbish the Naples area is.

Beautiful hills of Chianti Classico with its amazing landscapes and wineries is well worth the visit. The medieval towns of Siena, Volterra, San Gimignano, Colle di Val d'Elsa and the castle of Monteriggioni are a wonderful step into the rich history of one of Italy's most prosperous regions. And the Miracle Square in Pisa is just that, miraculous.

We had obviously planned our tour of Puglia, visiting the old town of Bari, then onto Alberobello, Lecce, Matera and Giovinazzo. all well worth visiting, the only downside was these centres were surrounded by ugly urban sprawl and parking was a continuing problem, the countryside itself was not the nicest in Italy. Overall the car was fine and the rental process was very easy. Personally I would get a bigger car as I underestimated the space needed when taking a baby (pram, extra luggage etc). I also may opt for a slightly more powerful car as many of the places in the region are situated at the top of steep hills and I found myself struggling to get up some of the steep roads.
