Airport travel guide
A city of learning, Fez is one of the most fascinating places in all of North Africa. Known as the home of what’s claimed to be the world’s oldest university, as well as library, it is also known for its historical architecture and tanneries. These are four of Fez’s most interesting attractions:
- Medina. Perhaps the most interesting old town in all of Morocco, Fez Medina has retained what feels like a very authentic atmosphere. Also known as El Bali, the area is divided into the so-called Qarawiyyin and Andalusian quarters. Make sure to pay attention to the large and ornate gates that serve as the entry points to the walled area.
- Bou Inania Madrasa. Although much younger than the city’s two main mosques - its construction dates back to the 1350s - Bou Inania is one of the most notable historical buildings in the city. A religious learning school, it is open to visitors of all faiths and is known for its vast courtyards and the impressive brick minaret.
- Volubilis. One of the most popular day trip destinations from Fez, Volubilis is an ancient Roman-Berber city that dates back to 2,300 years. Abandoned during medieval times, it is now in a state of disrepair, but impressive mosaics and temples survive to this day, and there is also an archaeological museum on site. The drive from Fez takes about 90 minutes.
- Nejjarine Museum. The Fez region is known for its intricate and various crafts, and one of the best places to learn about them is the Nejjarine Museum. Also known as Funduq al-Najjarin or the “Inn of the Carpenters”, the museum is located in a historical building that, thanks to its courtyard, arabesques, and other ornamentation, is an artwork in and of itself.
