Airport travel guide

Located in the southwestern corner of the country, Toulouse is sometimes left in the shadow of more famous French destinations like Paris, Nice, and Bordeaux. But those who give it a chance will discover not only a city with a magnificent past and exciting present but also a surrounding region with a unique identity and plenty to see and do. Here’s our pick of attractions in and around Toulouse:
- Churches and monasteries. Inhabited for more than 3,000 years, the city of Toulouse is actually significantly older than Christianity. All the same, the faith has played an important part in its culture and history which is best exemplified by Toulouse’s many beautiful religious buildings. The 800-year-old Basilica of Saint Sernin is arguably the most famous and most visited of these, but make time for the gothic Saint Stephen Cathedral, the Convent of the Jacobins, and the Augustinian monastery, now turned into a museum of fine arts.
- Albi. Speaking of religious history, another gem of the Occitanie region is the town of Albi. Nowadays a relaxed settlement of fewer than 50,000 people, it is home to the stunning Albi Cathedral. Its construction took almost 200 years, but nowadays, together with the surrounding Episcopal City complex, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. In addition to that, Albi is also famous for the Cathar Castles, impressive medieval buildings that once belonged to a religious movement of the same name before it was rooted out by Catholicism. Albi was also the hometown of the French post-impressionist Toulouse-Lautrec and there’s a museum in the artist’s honour. Located just 75 km (46 mi) northeast of Toulouse, Albi can be reached in about an hour by car.
- Pyrenees National Park. When people think of mountains in France, it’s the Alps that usually come up first. But on the other side of the country, shared with Spain and Andorra, is another mountain chain which, while not as high, is considered by many to be equally impressive. Made up of breathtaking peaks, well-marked hiking trails, and pristine highland lakes, and home to many unique flora and fauna species, the national park is the best place to get familiar with this impressive range. Located about 155 km (96 mi) southwest of Toulouse, the national park can be reached in about two hours.
