Madeira Rent at Madeira Airport (Funchal)

Pros: The staff at the desk at the airport explained everything. Car was in a very good condition,no issues during my hire. Convenient drop off outside working hours. Deposit refund the same day.

Cons: I was bit anxious that the staff did not check the car with me during pick up. They send email with existing damages of the car and it is in Portuguese, so I did not understand. Although I took the photos of the car. After I drop off the car I got email confirming no damages so all was fine in the end.

Pros: Very straight forward and quick. The staff were all friendly and helpful.

Cons: Nothing.

Cons: Ambiguity around checking the car, had to check myself and report back to the desk where everything was recorded. Difficult to fully check as it was dark.

Pros: Welcoming and friendly from the front desk located in the airport. The help from the representative we spoke with second to none. We had a car booked and after speaking and discussing specs (HP and engine size) helped us find an upgrade suitable although it wouldn’t be ready until the following day, he was able to find us one to use for the rest of that day and night. The whole experience was so easy and professional.

Cons: Few scratches and dents on both cars we had but that is to be expected due to the nature of rental cars and people that use them.

Pros: Very well organised and efficient. Staff a dream to deal with. Lovely people.

Cons: Person at the desk during pick up tried to undersell the car we originally booked to get us to get a bigger and more expensive car by telling us it was not a very good car and was weak but the car was brand new and very good. Something to be aware of - classic sales tactic

Pros: The pick up and drop off were easy and quick. We dropped the car back at 4am, there was an east drop off point and key drop service.

Pros: Friendly welcome and process. Upselling was expected but we didn't want.

Cons: The condition of the car at collection was very poor with a lot of scratches and marks. As there is no handover from a representative, you are relying on own photos and video. I spent the week worrying about the process of returning the car and my deposit not being returned. Thankfully it was fine.

Pros: No queue at checkout (big queue at other companies). Friendly staff. No pushy sales of extra insurance. Efficient. Really nice car (VW Golf auto). Would definitely use them again.

Cons: Was disappointed to find the car had a big scrape down side after paying so much. But car was almost new, used only twice and previous driver had returned it with damage, so not much they could do. Staff encouraged us to take photos of damage to reassure us we would have no issues.

Pros: Excellent car. Did not charge extra for dropping off car at 6 am before office was open. All very easy.

Pros: The highlights were the ease of pick up and drop off and the choice of cars when I went to pick mine up was good (although they did not have the model I chose at the time of renting). The car was in good condition and reasonably modern.

Cons: We ended up with a VW T-Cross with some sort of small three cylinder engine (1.2 litre at a guess) and it was under-powered for the hills around Madeira. It was also manual without any form of hill assist. I knew Madeira is very hilly and you have to be a reasonable driver to cope, so we survived, but with 4 people going up 25-30% inclines on narrow roads, I was often in first gear. You have to do a lot of hill starts, so an automatic with hill assist would have been useful.

Cons: They did not make clear how to exit the rental car compound by way of using a card at the barrier which was in the glove compartment and was also required to leave the car back. Additional charg for out of hours return when they just expect you to put the key in a box which costs them nothing

Pros: Speed of service, minimal fuss, clean and well equipped car.

Cons: The man at the desk offered us to pay cash to cover all excess fees in case of an accident, however he was aware we didn't need it as we already paid for comprehensive cover, so he was being cheeky. But I fully expected him to say that as they always try. He didn't have an issue when I said 'no'.

Pros: Best value out of all rental car offers and ease of picking up and dropping off.

Cons: We searched through many car hire companies to find Peugeot 3008 for wheelchair user , on arrival not car we ordered - but new car found, cleaned and filled with fuel in 10 mins.
