We stupidly asked for GPS despite agent telling us to use WAZE. The GPS was an old Garmin, totally out of date and unusable, as agent had said. They refunded the $10 a day fee when we told them we hadn't used it at all. They even upgraded us to a 4x4 for no extra charge.

A 1400km trip throughout Costa Rica from centrum to Rincon de la Vieja, along the Pacific Coast and back to the Irazú vulcan region. The notoriously bad road conditions were easily digested by this incredible vehicle

Costa Rica is a great country in terms of nature. Driving around Costa Ricas was a pleasure due to the micro climates. However the roads are really bad and it is suggested to get a good car.

We did a lot of driving on our trip. We went downtown San Jose (food tour) to La Fortuna (waterfall and Arenal) to Monteverde (cloud forest) to Palo Seco (Rainmaker Park and Manuel Antonio) to Uvita (beach) and back to San Jose.

Costa Rica was beautiful. I was surprised by the driving of the motorbikes and you must be very aware of them at all times because they will come out of nowhere and pass you on both sides of the road (even if there is no lane there).

Drove the car for 1,200 KM in 14 days across the central valley and pacific coast of Costa Rica. I strongly encourage travelers to get all wheel drive vehicles ,even if you are not planning on getting off road. Weather and traffic might force you to detour from your original route.

If you need to rent a vehicle in San Jose, this is a good place to do it. We stayed in the south pacific, three and half hours away and the traffic back to San Jose on Sunday when leaving was stop and go, taking us twice as long to get back to San Jose than it did to leave - 6 hours instead of 3.5. We almost missed our flight. For this reason I would likely take a small plane to the south pacific and rent a vehicle there if we go back.

Costa Rica requires 3rd party liability insurance which can greatly increase the cost of a rental. Don't rent a car for travel around San Jose; only pick it up when you are ready to explore the countryside.
