Rapidly growing over the last few decades, Montpellier might not be as famous as a tourist destination as other cities across Mediterranean France, but that is quickly changing. The city has plenty going on culturally and in terms of entertainment, and that’s not to mention proximity to some of the country’s loveliest beaches. Here are four suggestions for your trip:

• Place de la Comédie. Characteristically for the Mediterranean region, Montpellier’s main square is the beating heart of the city. Although it is named after a theater that no longer exists, plenty of other famous landmarks can be found in the square, not least the Montpellier Opera and the Three Graces fountain, while others, as well as some of the city’s finest restaurants, are just a short walk away.
• The Plant Garden of Montpellier. Dating back to the 16th century, this botanical garden, which doubles as an arboretum, is the oldest in all of France. Made up of a number of gardens and greenhouses that house both native and exotic plants, this is one of the nicest places to enjoy nature without leaving the city limits. The garden is just north of the city center and is open every day except on Mondays, with free admission for every visitor.
• Antigone. Located east of the center of Montpellier, Antigone is arguably one of the most interesting urban districts in all of Southern France. Built in the late 1970s in the place of a much older area of the city under the directions of the Catalan architect Ricardo Boffil, it is immediately recognizable for its boulevards, green areas, and neo-classical buildings, many of them situated along the Lez river. Visitors who come to explore, or even just accidentally wander through the area, usually end up taking countless pictures of Antigone.
• Aigues-Mortes. Despite its foreboding name — it translates as ‘dead or still waters’ — Aigues-Mortes is one of the nicest little towns in the area. Known for its historical town walls, which remain in good shape to this day, as well as some of the region’s nicest restaurants, it also provides access to the Camargue Regional Nature Park, a bird-watching paradise. The drive from Montpellier to Aigues-Mortes takes only about 35 minutes.

Location

Montpellier Airport is about 7 km (4.3 mi) east of Montpellier. Motorway D66, Avenue Pierre Mendès-France, and Avenue Jean Mermoz are the main roads connecting the airport to the city.

You’ll find bars, coffee shops, and restaurants, as well as various shops, including a convenience store and a duty-free outlet. There are also ATMs, a currency exchange, an on-site hotel, a children’s play area, baby changing rooms, a lost and found office, and a post office. The airport is equipped for passengers with reduced mobility, and special assistance can be requested, but make sure to contact your airline in advance if you’d like this service.

Nearest gas station

Dyneff Service Station, located at Aéroport Montpellier-Méditerranée, 34130 Mauguio, can be reached in about two minutes and is open daily from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. There are many other gas stations near Montpellier Airport and on the way to the city.
