Known for its historic landmarks from different eras, many green spaces, and great cultural institutions, it offers sophistication and excitement in equal measure. These are five of its most notable attractions:
- Edinburgh Castle. As far as castles go, this one is among the most impressive in the United Kingdom, if not all of Europe as its 2.2 million annual visitors can testify. Dating back to the 11th century (although Castle Rock, on which it spectacularly sits, was inhabited much earlier), the castle has been rebuilt and renovated but has always remained the symbol of the city.
- National Museum of Scotland. Dedicated to all things Scottish, this is one of the main cultural institutions in Edinburgh — and one of its main tourist attractions. It would be impossible to list all of the exhibits on display, but even visitors who do not deem themselves lovers of history will probably be impressed by the full skeleton of Stegosaurus, ornate Celtic brooches, or the taxidermy of Dolly the sheep; the first cloned mammal.
- Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh. Not just a botanical garden, but also a center for study, the RBGE is another beloved tourist attraction. In addition to fascinating collections of both local and exotic flora, the garden is also home to one of the best herbariums in the United Kingdom..
- Arthur’s Seat. Sitting in the beautiful Holyrood Park just a short walk from Edinburgh’s Royal Mile is Arthur’s Seat. As the highest point in the park, you get amazing views of Edinburgh Castle, Calton Hill and the spires dotted across the city.The remains of a volcano, this walk is well worth doing for active travellers.
- Museum of Childhood. It is often claimed that this is the first museum in the world to focus specifically on the topic of childhood, and whether it is true or not, this museum is definitely one of the most interesting attractions of Edinburgh. With diverse and interactive expositions that will be interesting to both children and adults, the museum explains what growing up in Britain has been like over the last few centuries.

We went from Edinburgh where we spend a few days up to Inverness. We enjoyed the Cairngorm National Park and drove all down A9 stopping for several sites and hikes. It was a lovely time.

We took a 12 day road trip with a total of seven stays along the route. Began in Edinburgh (3 nights in Gorebridge:visited the Edinburgh Castle, walked the Royal Mile, Scotch Whisky Experience, Scott monument and local pubs and restaurants. Glasgow (2 nights): Good Spirits Company, National Piping Centre museum, Kelgrove Art and Gallery Museum, Hop On Hop Off bus tour and walk-abouts. Oban (1 night): Oban Whisky Distillery Tour, Oban War & Peace Museum, Oban walkabout, local restaurants and pub visits. Applecross: (2 nights): long drive from Oban, nature and ruins walkabout in remote areas. Wonderful natural views. Dingwall (2 nights): Train trips to Inverness; walkabout, whisky tastings, Black Isle Brewery restaurant. Pitlochary (2 nights) Whisky walk hike to Edradour (closed to visitors); Blair Athol Distillery tour, city walkabouts; Striling Castle visit and walk, The Falkirk Wheel visit and view in action, The Kelpies. Return to Edinburgh for 1 night prior to early departure back to USA the next morning.

Inverness was amazing, eilean donan castle incredable, portree village were nice and The Isles Inn 👌, old mans storr was also amazing with all that viewes, fairy pools was also worth to hike, The Hollytree Hotel in Kentallen/Glencoe really nice staff and Midhope Castle at last with quick stop with pics ended the road trip nicely. ☺️

The whole country is amazing. Highlights were golfing in St. Andrews, little out of the way whisky distilleries (don't go to the big ones), Edinburgh, seeing Elton John in Aberdeen, the breathtaking scenery, in particular Glencoe. There are lots of little gems to discover out there. Ask the locals.

We had a great holiday and didn't let the awful cars Drivalia (Easirent) gave us, spoil it. Scotland is beautiful. And the Manager at Drivalia was obviously sympathetic, plus the office staff were professional making up for the god awful maintenance and cleaners they employ!
