Airport travel guide

Proud and distinct, the city of Liverpool is one of the most interesting urban destinations in all of the United Kingdom. Liverpool was named the European Capital of Culture for 2008. These are four of its most notable attractions:
- Merseyside Maritime Museum. Liverpool is first and foremost a port city built on the riches that its longstanding maritime prowess has attracted. There’s no better place to learn about this crucial heritage than at the Merseyside Maritime Museum. Touching on both proud and problematic pages of the city’s history, it does a great job of telling an important story. The museum is appropriately located in the redeveloped Albert Dock area and is part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Other iconic attractions include the Royal Liver Building and the Liverpool World Museum.
- Williamson Tunnels. A vast network of underground passageways, the Tunnels are one of the most unusual landmarks of Liverpool. Created about 200 years ago for no discernible practical purpose, they feature prominently in the local urban folklore and have now been turned into a fascinating tourist attraction. There is also an accompanying Heritage Center open every day save Mondays.
- Anfield. Liverpool is nothing if not a football city, and these are good days for the supporters of FC Liverpool as the team is currently one of the best in the world. A visit to the team’s home stadium, then, is an adventure as it permits seeing some of the slickest ball-playing Englishmen, Brazilians, and other virtuosos on the planet (though it’s a good idea to buy tickets well in advance). For a somewhat different, but just as atmospheric, experience, consider a visit to Goodison Park, home of FC Liverpool’s arch-nemesis Everton whom some consider to be the city’s true working-class team.
- The Beatles Story. Although not all Liverpudlians are too excited about their whole history sometimes being reduced to four men who did some notable things in the 1960s, there is no denying that The Beatles are Liverpool’s most famous sons. The countless visitors who would like to experience this side of the city could do worse than head to The Beatles Story, a gallery that has a lot of original memorabilia and also plays an ongoing song dedicated to the band.
