Airport travel guide
Sometimes overlooked in favor of its neighbors, Valencia to the north and Andalusia to the south, Murcia remains an under-the-radar destination, but can be a fascinating place to visit if you give it a chance. In addition to lovely Mediterranean beaches, it also boasts ancient sites, unique culture, and genuine hospitality. These are three of Murcia’s most interesting attractions:
- Murcia. The capital and the largest city of the province, Ciudad de Murcia offers a less crowded, but just as historic and vibrant experience of Southern Spain as, say, Seville or Malaga. Situated alongside Segura river, its territory has been inhabited since prehistory, but it was founded as a city in the 9th century by the Arabic-speaking rulers of the Emirate of Cordoba. The city’s diverse cultural heritage is well-reflected in its architecture and cuisine
- Cartagena. Not to be confused with the larger Colombian city of the same name, one of the most visited places in South America (which was, in fact, named after this Cartagena), the Murcian city dates back to the 3rd century BC when it was settled by the Phoenician-speaking Carthaginian people. Nowadays, it is known for its ancient and medieval sites, but also as a gateway to some of the region’s best beaches. A car trip from Murcia Airport takes only about 25 minutes.
- Alicante. Speaking of beaches, there are few places in Spain that are visited by as many seaside lovers as Alicante. Situated in the neighboring Valencian region, just over an hour’s drive northeast of Murcia Airport, it is both a major urban and holiday hub in the beautiful Costa Blanca region. The more central beaches of Alicante get extremely busy, thanks in no small part to its wonderful promenade, but there are also more tranquil places to visit to the north and south of the city proper.
- Mar Menor. One of these more relaxed beach destinations is Mar Menor. The ‘Smaller Sea’ is a saltwater lagoon and one of the most popular water sports hubs in Spain. Especially known for its great kitesurfing, the region has a coastline of about 50 km (30 miles) plus the 22 km (15 miles) of the narrow spit of La Manga that separates it from the Mediterranean. A car trip takes only 30 minutes from Cartagena and 50 minutes from the city of Murcia.
