Not to be confused with its namesakes in Indonesia and Guatemala, Flores is one of the two westernmost islands of the Azores. Remote even in the context of this Atlantic archipelago, it is actually on the North American tectonic plate. These are three of its most interesting attractions:

• Santa Cruz das Flores. Despite having only 2,000 permanent inhabitants, Santa Cruz is the main settlement on Flores - and one of the most interesting places to visit! Located on the eastern shore and thus facing its Azorean sisters, it is located right next to the airport and often forms a base for exploring the rest of the island. Don’t miss out on the island museum that’s located in a repurposed building that used to host a monastery.
• Flores Nature Park. Taking up much of the north and west of the island, this is one of the most recently established but also one of the most scenic areas in all of the Azores. Characterized by deciduous forests and snow-capped peaks, but also wild beaches and volcanic lakes, it is a great place for hiking or simply a long day outdoors. Make sure to check out the visitors center to learn more about local ecosystems, including the whales that can often be spotted off the coast of Flores!
• Fajã Grande. Situated inside the aforementioned nature park, the village of Fajã Grande deserves a special mention as it’s been called the westernmost settlement of Europe (though some would claim that Flores and the neighboring island of Corvo are the easternmost settlements of North America). Even if you don’t care for such geographical oddities, the place is certainly worth a visit for its impressive waterfall and delicious local cuisine.

Flores Airport is in the Santa Cruz das Flores parish of Flores Island. Any destination on the island that’s accessible by car can be reached in 30 minutes or less.

Santa Cruz das Flores Airport is very likely the smallest public airport that you’ll ever visit. Nonetheless, you’ll find a small and cozy shop where you can buy food, handicrafts, works of art, and CDs made by local artists. The airport is partially equipped for passengers with reduced mobility. Special assistance is also available, but make sure to contact your airline at least 48 hours before arrival if you’d like this service. Keep in mind that the airport is only open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day.
