Airport travel guide
Serving the city of the same name, Pula Airport is located at the very tip of the Istria peninsula. Although not quite as popular as the Dalmatian coast, this northwestern region boasts unique culture, ancient landmarks, scenic towns, and many beautiful beaches. These are six of Istria’s most notable tourist attractions:
- Pula. Istria has plenty of riches, but to get a first impression, you need to look no further than the town of Pula itself. Home to a fascinating history, its main attraction is the Arena, a 1st-century Roman amphitheater that’s in reasonably good shape. The nearby Roman Forum, 6th-century orthodox church, and the Archaeological Museum are also worth a visit.
- Brijuni. An archipelago of 14 islands, a resort, and a national park, Brijuni is one of the most interesting destinations in Istria. Located near Pula and just west of the mainland, the area is known for its lavish villas, parks, and scenic beaches. Only two of the islands are accessible to the public. You cannot take a car to Brijuni, but it’s possible to park at Fažana, the small town from where the boat to the islands departs.
- Porec. Located in the picturesque region of Istria, Porec is a historic coastal town in Croatia known for its well-preserved Roman architecture and stunning coastline. Visitors to Porec can explore the UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica, relax on beautiful beaches, and enjoy the region's renowned cuisine, making it a popular destination for both history buffs and beachgoers.
- Rovinj. Located on the west coast of Istria, Rovinj (or Rovigno) is known for its unique cultural heritage — it has two official languages, Croatian and Italian. For five centuries, Rovinj, along with the rest of the region, was part of the Republic of Venice, and the Italian influence remains notable in the town’s architecture, culture, and cuisine.
- Slovenia. Located just a 90-minute drive from Pula (and even closer to some other Istrian destinations), Croatia’s neighbor is quickly becoming one of Europe’s hottest travel destinations. From its wonderful capital, Ljubljana, to the charming Lake Bled and pristine Alpine scenery, Slovenia has plenty of things for travelers to enjoy. Both Croatia and Slovenia are members of the Schengen Area, but some rental car suppliers still do not allow crossing borders – check the rental conditions in advance.
- Rijeka. Located immediately to the east of Istria, Croatia’s third-largest city is also one of its most underrated destinations. Known for its creative, independent spirit, Rijeka also boasts unique architecture that is a testament to the various historical influences that the former independent city-state experienced. Other attractions include a diverse array of museums and the wonderful seaside Kantrida pools.
