With that in mind, here are three short and fun trips you can take from Stansted Airport:
- Cambridge. One of the most famous university towns in the world, Cambridge is also a popular tourist destination. Cambridge’s main draw is its many beautiful buildings, many of them in a distinctly Gothic or neo-Gothic style. Notable gems include the King’s College Chapel, Queen’s College, and the Peterhouse. If the weather permits, one of the nicest things to do is to go punting (a type of boat riding characteristic of Cambridge) and enjoy the city views from the river. The drive from Stansted Airport to Cambridge takes only about 40 minutes wihtout traffic.
- Colchester. Sometimes overlooked by Britons and foreign visitors alike, Colchester is one of the nicest towns in Southeast England. There are a large number of heritage buildings such as the impressive Colchester Castle and Jumbo Water Tower, as well as the remaining fragments of the town’s Roman walls. The city’s cultural institutions include the Natural History Museum and the Minories Gallery of contemporary art. The drive from Stansted takes only 40 minutes without traffic
- The Suffolk Coast and Heaths. Categorized as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this protected region is a popular tourist destination. We were able to cover well over 3000 miles with a round the UK trip, including Wales & the North Coast 500 & Landsend to Dunnet Head. Great trip in the trusty Fiat 500 City.
Even got to see the Northern Lights after missing them in Iceland & Norway!

Everything was great: nature, historical places, even weather! But the roads should be better maintained. And motorway speed limits especially when there are road works (without workers actually present on site) eat a lot of time you could spend on sightseeing.

Roadside assistance should be much better - what if I were broken down in a dangerous place or had medical issues? I was left feeling very uncomfortable, especially since rental cars today don't even provide spare tires!
