Airport travel guide

Very popular with Ryanair and a number of other low-cost airlines, Stansted Airport is known as one of the main gateways to the British capital. But while most travelers make their way straight to London, the location of the airport northeast of the capital means it provides easy access to a number of other interesting attractions. With that in mind, here are three short and fun trips you can take from Stansted Airport:
- Cambridge. One of the most famous university towns in the world, Cambridge is also a popular tourist destination. Cambridge’s main draw is its many beautiful buildings, many of them in a distinctly Gothic or neo-Gothic style. Notable gems include the King’s College Chapel, Queen’s College, and the Peterhouse. If the weather permits, one of the nicest things to do is to go punting (a type of boat riding characteristic of Cambridge) and enjoy the city views from the river. The drive from Stansted Airport to Cambridge takes only about 40 minutes wihtout traffic.
- Colchester. Sometimes overlooked by Britons and foreign visitors alike, Colchester is one of the nicest towns in Southeast England. There are a large number of heritage buildings such as the impressive Colchester Castle and Jumbo Water Tower, as well as the remaining fragments of the town’s Roman walls. The city’s cultural institutions include the Natural History Museum and the Minories Gallery of contemporary art. The drive from Stansted takes only 40 minutes without traffic
- The Suffolk Coast and Heaths. Categorized as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this protected region is a popular tourist destination. In addition to beaches, the Suffolk Coast is characterized by a landscape that includes low cliffs, heathland, salt marshes, and a small ancient forest. Once you get to the area, there is a network of footpaths that lets you explore it closer. The drive from Stansted Airport takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes wihtout traffic.

You can easily walk between any two parts of the airport. Permission has been granted to build a new arrivals terminal. In the meantime, several million dollars was spent renovating the departure lounge.
