With low-cost airlines ferrying tourists from many British cities, that is unsurprising. Many come for the architecture, culture, and nightlife of the city, but most come for the sunny weather and gorgeous beaches.
The best way to reach said beaches is by hiring a car. Most Brits visiting Portugal choose the hire a car for their holiday. Whether staying in a luxurious resort or hopping up the coast from beach to beach, having a car gives you the most freedom. And with such demand comes a major supply of hire cars — and incredibly low prices.
Tolls: Toll roads in Portugal can be confusing, for sure. You may be offered an electronic transponder by your hire company which will likely come with an extra daily fee. If traveling in the area around Lisbon, you may not need it as you can pay for most tolls with a credit card or in cash. If planning to travel to the Algarve region and using the A22, you will want to take it. Of course, you always have the choice of avoiding it and therefore not needing a transponder.
Driving to Spain: The Spanish border is roughly 200km from Lisbon Airport. You can take most hire cars from Lisbon Airport to Spain. However, note that there is an additional fee to cross the border which varies from company to company, and that you must inform the hire company ahead of time.

- Obidos. Known for its cute (if rather steep) cobblestone streets, quaint architecture, and the mighty walls that surround it all, Obidos is another fun day trip destination. The attractive medieval village is also characterized by the mighty Obidos Castle, the distinctly blue azulejo tiles, and one of the nicest bookshops in Portugal. The drive from Lisbon takes about an hour, and if you’re not short on time, you can continue towards Nazare, a coastal town known as the location of the highest wave ever surfed.

Had a good experience overall. The only downside was having to head back to change the car due to a simple malfunction that could have been avoided by checking the oil beforehand. Cars should definitely be checked a little more to prevent issues like this.
Other than that it was a pleasant trip.

Arrived in Lisbon, and was picked up at the airport in a most expedient fashion, and rented a wonderful Mercedes hatchback. The car was very comfortable and economical, and took us from Lisbon to Fatima Porto two Nazare, Lagos, and many other places and had a wonderful time and looking forward to returning to Portugal, and will definitely rent another car from this great company, Peter

Drove round Portugal, my only regret was not getting a bigger car with better aircon. We had a Fiat Panda which was great for some of the small roads and streets inside castle walls, but not so great when getting on toll roads, it was a little under powered and the aircon was next to useless. The lad at Recordgo made me laugh as he said you’ve always got windows! 😂

I owned a house in the silver coast. It was mine and my partner first time taken my little 10 months girl to Portugal. Praia do Baleal it’s a must see location, Óbidos castle and Nazaré really beautiful. We went to Coimbra also to the Portugal dos Pequenitos and Porto (Ribeira) try a francesinha with chips if you can😁and watch the time go by 🍺

Must eat Zubir Chicken in Lisbon if you fancy Piri Piri Chicken.
Never eat and go to Bangla Street near Martim Muniz worst place to eat and stay.
Visit Algarve specially Benagali Cave drive is about 2hr30 min from Lisbon but toll charges of return cost you €80 keep this in mind.

Great trip. Car really easy to drive and good on fuel.
Highlights of the trip included visiting the many wonderful beaches along the coast of Ericeira. Best beach we visited was Praia do Sul.
Then there was the mountain bike hire with Ericeira Bikes, which was fantastic. Bruno was really knowledgable and took the group on a circular trail, heading out to coast.
We visited Cascais and mooched around before getting a train to Belém, which was great and really cheap. We sampled the world famous Pastéis de Nata and walked along the promenade before heading back to Ericeira.
We visited Manzwine and did some wine sampling, which was good value at €15.00 for 6 wines, with some bread and delicious olive oil.
We visited Mafra and walked around the palace.
Too much to list but will return one day for surf lessons. Amazing place, friendly locals.

This was our eighth visit to Portugal and we have hired a car on all visits but one. It is easy to get around, especially if you use the motorways, some of which are toll roads. We love to stop in some of the small towns and to sit in the local coffee shops. In many cases, we are the only tourists.

When renting the car take in consideration extras you need to add such as road tools which is not cheap in Portugal , which is almost doubled the rent price if you do cross country . In many cities/towns free parking after 7PM till 8/9AM (read the signs) , so no need secured parking which is very costly

Please note the meeting point is right OUTSIDE the airport, at a type of bus stop, opposite the vodaphone store (which is inside). A mini bus then takes you to Parque day Nacoes/Oriente, where you collect the car. If you are already in Lisbon, its probably much better to go straight to the Parque gas nacoes office. Otherwise everything was very good.

Driving in Lisbon is not easy since actual road numbers and road map numbers are not always the same. Very busy and easy to miss junctions or take wrong turns. Great driving once outside the city though.

Portugal is Portugal. As a frequent visitor, with a partner living in country I would wholeheartedly recomment............. EVERYWHERE! From eating Francesinha in the North, Choco frito in Setubal, Peixinhas fritos in the Algarve, or Lapas grelhadas in Madeira! From the colourful beauty of Porto, the majestic Alpinesque Serra das Estrelas, the Architecture of Lisbon, the stunning Costa Azul of Setubal, the incredible beaches of, well, everywhere, and the near year round sun of the Algarve! Oh, and did I forget to mention the mindblowing scenery of Madeira............(Sorry Azores, I know that you're out there, I just haven't made it out to you yet!)

Collected the car from Lisbon Airport drove down to to see family members in Benavente and the few days later to Guia Algarve for a wonderful experience in a rented house with a pool . Lovely place and area with wonderful deserted beaches and golden sand and clean sea water ! We’ll recommended .

Rented a car to visit some of the beaches around Lisbon. The beaches were wonderful and the car allowed me to get to some of the better beaches like Comporta, but also allowed me to explore several different areas and beaches, all withing easy reach from Lisbon!

Lisbon to Porto - Guarda - Douro Valley - Penha Garcia - Monsanto
The road trip was amazing but I’d recommend the smallest car possible as the roads are narrow in the rural areas.
It’s also worth getting the toll pass in advance from the rental company as there are several toll roads and you could be stuck in a queue if you pay at each one. The pass is quick and easy and you don’t even have to worry about stopping.
In Lisbon we stayed in the city. Parking after 7pm and On weekends is free so if you are going to be using the car a lot then it’s ok to keep it.
