- Nazaré. A Central Portuguese beach town of some 15,000 inhabitants, Nazaré would be a fairly unassuming destination if not for the fact that it is home to the highest wave ever surfed by man. Ever since the American Garrett McNamara braved the 23.8 m (78 feet) high wave in 2011 (a record that was further improved by the Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa in 2017), Nazaré has attracted thousands of visitors every year – and the Portuguese government even memorialized the monumental effort by releasing a special postmark. Even if you prefer to stay dry, watching the stunning tide in Nazaré, about a 90-minute drive north of Lisbon, is a special experience.

Amazing trip to Sintra Monserrate Palace which was easier to access than main Sintra palaces by car. Toured all round Portugal using Michellin guide for scenic routes. Setabul ferry was fun way to travel down to Algarve which routed via eucalyptus forests. Middle of Portugal near Mire de Air, Tomar, Leira, all beautiful.

Portugal is my native country, we were not tourists we were attending a family event. However we did spend a very pleasant evening in the Alfama district of Lisbon. I would recommend that anyone going to Lisbon visit Alfama, the oldest district of Lisbon, especially during the month of June when the festivals are on. The Algarve at this time of year is also very pleasant, the weather is good and there are not too many tourists.
