Dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, this fine example of Portuguese Gothic architecture is now home to the National Archaeology Museum and the Navy Museum of Lisbon.

- Nazaré. A Central Portuguese beach town of some 15,000 inhabitants, Nazaré would be a fairly unassuming destination if not for the fact that it is home to the highest wave ever surfed by man. Ever since the American Garrett McNamara braved the 23.8 m (78 feet) high wave in 2011 (a record that was further improved by the Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa in 2017), Nazaré has attracted thousands of visitors every year – and the Portuguese government even memorialized the monumental effort by releasing a special postmark. Even if you prefer to stay dry, watching the stunning tide in Nazaré, about a 90-minute drive north of Lisbon, is a special experience.

An amazing road trip from vibrant Lisbon, leaving its art Nouveau streets and culinary treats to the amazing Nazaré and it’s awe inspiring surf. Onward to the crossroads of traditional Coimbra on the banks of the Mondego river. Medieval streets mix with its vibrant university youth culture. Drive the winding roads to scenic Douro. Portugal is my native country, we were not tourists we were attending a family event. However we did spend a very pleasant evening in the Alfama district of Lisbon. I would recommend that anyone going to Lisbon visit Alfama, the oldest district of Lisbon, especially during the month of June when the festivals are on. The Algarve at this time of year is also very pleasant, the weather is good and there are not too many tourists.

Lisbon got plenty of restaurants with really good food with suitable prices so not too expensive and it's a historic city with a lot of views like a castle, museums, palaces and because its near the coast its got beaches to spend a little bit of time in the sun.

Insist on a car with an actual spare wheel, not just a pump or a temporary wheel. I drove over 2000km around Portugal, from the Douro Valley to the Algarve. Roads are mostly easy; some, in the mountains, can be challenging - love that!

we travelled over 2000 km's to Cascasi, Obidos, Vilamoura and Sao Martinho Do Porto - we found having a motorway pass really useful as it meant there was not stopping at tolls. No toll roads are great if a little badly maintained

We went to central Portugal. Fatima to be exact, which was very tranquil and quiet. Especially with all that is going on. Obviously the nearest beaches is over an hour drive which we could tolerate as we didn't plan to visit much.
