Despite being the capital of New Zealand, Wellington remains somewhat undiscovered by foreign visitors, most of whom head to either Auckland or the natural wonders of the South Island. That being said, the city has plenty to offer if you give it a chance. These are three of the most interesting attractions in and around Wellington:

• Te Papa. Also known by its full name, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, this institution is one of the most important cultural landmarks in the Kiwi capital. Located in a unique, purpose-built complex, the museum focuses on both the colonial and indigenous history of New Zealand, featuring exhibitions on the subjects of art, folklore, and natural history. Te Papa means ‘treasure box’ in Maori.
  
• Wellington Botanic Garden. There is no shortage of natural beauty in New Zealand – in fact, for many visitors, it is the number one reason to visit the country – and while some of it is only a short drive away from the capital, other nature can be enjoyed without even leaving the city! One of the best places for that is Wellington’s beautiful botanic garden which is just a stone’s throw from the city center and provides home to both endemic and exotic flora, as well as many native bird species.
• Old Government Buildings. After having housed the government of New Zealand for over 100 years, this complex was turned into a heritage center in the 1990s and now ranks among the most notable and visited landmarks in Wellington. The main building is one of the largest wooden structures in the whole world, and now also provides home to a law school.

Wellington Airport has a single terminal which is divided into three piers — the South, South-West, and North West.

Location

Wellington Airport is in the suburb of Rongotai 10 km (6.2 mi) south of the city center; the trip between them takes about 15 minutes.

Cozy and fairly small, Wellington Airport offers free WiFi, free showers, and a decent choice of shops and restaurants. There are also two paid lounges and a number of nearby hotels with shuttle services. The airport is closed every night from 1:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m.

Nearest gas station

A Z gas station is part of the airport complex, shares an address with it, and will be on your right when leaving for the city. There are several other gas stations on the way to Wellington.
