Mode Car Rentals at Wellington Airport

Cons: The USB port of my car was broken. And the light command of the wheel didn't work very good. Moderentals manager in Christchurch - agency joined to change our car rented in Wellington- said that USB plugs were no more in use in more recently cars. And that information, after checking, was a big lie ! In fact, our Toyota Corolla wagon was an old model, whose checking seemed not to be done well before the pick up...

Cons: Mode Rentals small premises in an exposed unsealed area with no shelter for customers would be a major problem in wet weather. We tried to return our car at 8.15am on Sunday 20th to find locked gates and the person inside would not receive the car saying his boss would not allow it and they would not be opening until 9am. We left the car, gave him the keys and called a taxi to take us to the airport (cost $28.10) . I would never use a car from Mode Rentals again.

Cons: They initially took $100 from my account without promision. I argued the point but they still succeeded with $50. It wasnt made clear that there was an after hours fee. I hope by rating mode rentals the way I have will give them time to reflect. It isn't fair to take people's hard working money and think there isn't an issue in doing so. I'd rather walk till my feet blister before using mode rentals, even than I would keep walking.

Cons: To register everything upfront pick-up is fine. But why then paying an outside office hours fee when I do anyway the registration? The return at Auckland downtown is a nightmare: difficult to find, roads closed due to a concert nearby and finding the key-box needs Sherlock Holms capabilities. Clearer instructions and signalisation is necessary.

Then when I saw the extra charge on a more itemized statement, it was too late to do anything. I also had trouble checking in by phone as instructed. I eventually had to call the Wellington office to learn that I had to get there by 17:00, and no, there was no shuttle from the ferry building as I'd thought.

Cons: The service was terrible, we had agreed that they would meet us at the airport instead of transferring our group but they had obviously forgotten but did come to the airport where they were extremely aggressive shouting at us and actually threw the keys into the vehicle before skidding out of the airport carpark. No paper work or instructions.

When doing paperwork back at the container the other staff member didn’t acknowledge me at all didn’t look at me or say anything seemed quite rude to me and the other staff member. The car was listed as 2016-2018. It had no GPS and I would have guessed it was a 2012-2014. The car ran well, but during my rental the muffler started ratting very badly and thought it might come off.

Had to call Christchurch office for them to transfer me to the Wellington office. Customer service was disgusted by them over the phone. The shuttle service - useless. Paid for the rental online ($330 plus) andwas told only had to pay $20 on pick up but ended up paying $120 instead. Also with another $300 hold. I think everything should have been clearly stated online with purchase.

Cons: The car had been cleaned on the inside but was FILTHY on the outside. This included spider webs and grimy handles. Car was old for a rental with more than 150,000 kms on the clock. No modern touches like sat nav which are important in a rental. Obviously in poor condition with bad wipers and judder in the brakes but no option as other cars not available or in any better condition at the Wellington depot. Auckland appeared to have much better/newer vehicles when we dropped the car off.

This is not ideal, as I had not contact with the company representative, but still had to pay $40 after hours fee?

Also I had to pay $40 for a early drop off time at 8:30am I would expect that for a drop off at 5 or 6am in the morning but not 8:30am. They also wanted me to drop the car at a petrol station and walk across the road to the airport with a baby and 4 bags. They did shuttle me but only after I questioned it. It was always hard to get hold of someone when I called the office number.
